Bolingbrook Father Petitions Village to 'Stop the Violence'

A break in a fence line between a subdivision and townhomes is a "gateway for persons involved in criminal activity," the petition says.

A Bolingbrook man has launched an online petition to close an opening in a fence line between his neighborhood and the subdivision of townhomes on Fernwood Drive.

Christopher Montrose has garnered 123 supporters so far on his online petition. He's looking for 200 total.

Read the full petition on Change.org

Montrose is a single father of four who lives on Harwood Drive. The street dead ends behind Rocket Ice Arena, abutting Lot O of Fernwood Drive.

He writes on Change.org that on Sept. 15, someone tossed his 15-inch high cement statue through his children's bedroom window.

"Seconds later, (he heard) the blood curdling scream of my own children and then them running out of their room...Unfortunately, glass was thrown through the room and into the hallway. And on top of that, now I have children afraid of their own bedroom."

Montrose writes that the opening in the fence line is "a gateway for persons involved in criminal activity." Montrose and those commenting on the petition have mentioned multiple residential and car burglaries and graffiti.

"We as residents of this block are in need of help to get this issue resolved. Our homes, our property, and our children are falling victims to the ongoing crime that this opening allows."

The petition will be sent to the village of Bolingbrook.

The following is the petition letter:

I just signed the following petition addressed to: Village of Bolingbrook.

----------------
Remove a foot traffic opening in a fence line.

The opening in this fence line is a gateway for persons involved in criminal activity. Multiple residential, vehicle break ins, as well as ongoing property damage. This opening is also access for people to engage in drug sales as well. We as residents of this block and others against drugs and violence are in need of help to get this issue resolved. Our homes, our property, and our children are falling victims to the ongoing crime that this opening allows.
----------------

Sincerely,

[Your name]

I understand the reason for the petition. The police in Bolingbrook do a fantastic job, when you notify them with a problem of this sort. Have you contacted them for more help?
Make sure your citizen watch group notifies the police of ANY suspicious activity.

I'm not saying not to put that fence up.

Fences don't work. One instance is the U.S/Mexican border fence, Illegal immigrants still cross over. Where there's a will ,there's a way. Plus it's not Bolingbrook property, it's up to the owner of the property line to install the fence.

Just two articles down in the police blotter is this: "LeAntoine Williams, 18, of 12 I Fernwood Dr. was arrested at 1:10 p.m. and charged with burglary to motor vehicle after breaking the window to a car on the 200 block of Falconridge Way, Bolingbrook police said. " So maybe the neer-do-wells actually live on Fernwood Drive?

I have been in contact with the crime officer. I have been working with the detectives as well. We are working on getting together a neighborhood watch program back here, something that Officer Ferry (Crime Officer) had suggested we implement. A great idea. Now comparing 20 feet of fence to the Mexico border is like comparing the Sox to the Cubs...cant be done. Yes there will be the strong willed that will jump the fence. However, its going to deter a great majority of the trafficking of drugs on this street, the crime on this street, and any that works its way into the Seabury neighborhood from here. We are not talking a nation of people wanting better off here.. We are talking about a group of people that seem to enjoy disrespecting others property and surroundings. But thank you Bolingbrook Patch for your support for our neighborhood. Thank you all that have supported us in signing this petition. It is greatly appreciated and taken to heart!! THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS!

Thank you all for taking an interest in this area. I live in Beaconridge & can no longer walk my dog at night due to the males that stand around drinking in lot K. There is also cars driving in and out doing drug transactions at 109 Jamestown lane. On top of that, a taxi company is running their business in this same lot and keep driving their taxis in and out of the lot at night. There are many children that live here and I am afraid one will be hurt by these rushing taxis.

Bolingbrook PD are completely aware of the on goings in the areas of Beaconridge as well as Fernwood. They know whats going on. However until they are able to catch these person or persons in the act and can prosecute, they will continue. But we as a community can help them in making them aware of what is going on. If theres something not right, if theres people doing drug deals. Call the police, SPEAK UP!!!!! After speaking with the Chief this morning, he told me to call on anything suspicious. And I plan to take him up on that offer. We need to stand up to this, we need to change our community.

Oh, my mother and I both have called BPD many times, along with my neighbor, who is a good person, but unfortunately is going to move because of the neighbors that G. Galindo refers to as drinking liquor like camels. They come out and shine a light in their face and leave.
By the way G. Galindo, you might want to pay more attention to these people. Why would they be exchanging items thru car windows in the wee hours of the night?. Maybe just trading beers? I think not. I'm not a newbie to Beaconridge either. My family has lived here since the 70's. The problem starts when we accept the unacceptable behavior of less than stellar residents. FYI, one of those "camel drinkers" is on the local sex offender list. You seem to know a lot about them, check it for yourself.

Beaconridge not the only location on the police blotter, been here 34years and perhaps if we didn't have so many section 8's and renters it might be better. But you do have to keep an eye out for your neighborhood and call the police . Proud to say in that time I raised a good cop of my own.

Hey Faith, do you consider me bad? I rent and I am your friend. I plant flowers and keep my house looking nice. I pick up from the home owners that don't care. I have been in some homes that people own and let me tell you it's not pretty. It depends on the people and their morals and care of their surroundings. All people that rent are not bad. I used to own my own home also but due to circumstances, loss of job, cancer, things changed. We just need to stand together and make those calls to the police when you see something bad happeneing.I am not Sec. 8 but I can tell you that doesn't make them all bad. I don't understand why people characterize everyone bad because of situations. You to can some day be a renter. Watch what you say because it might come back at you one day. Always remeber in life there are good and bad.We just need to work harder together.

The landlords need to add a community disturbance policy in the lease What can community groups do? Start a neighborhood watch and be the “eyes and ears” of police, law-abiding persons keeps criminals away.A little co-operation can go a long way. Most people will appreciate the fact that they can count on their neighbors to look out for them, and are more than willing to return the favor! If you all work together, your neighborhood can not only be safe and welcoming, it will develop into a tightly knit community as well.I also say we need to ask for more patroling of these so called bad areas. Plant a cop or two in the area for a while and see what happens. Small town America has given way to urban sprawl. There should be no loitering allowed in the streets especially drinking. Arrest them and fine them is something that should be done. Here is a local orginazation to use. http://www.bolingbrookcrimestoppers.org/

@TMI section 8 has a clause that if the renter or anyone living in the rental causes criminal activity or they are arrested , they can be tossed out of the rental property.

Sorry, but I'm not that Mario. I don't drive a limo, we only park in our allotted parking spaces and we aren't moving. After being here all these years, I AM sick & tired of all the RIFF RAFF & I am going to start calling BPD every time they disturb me or my family! I work every day, pay my mortgage on time, and respect my neighbors, but unfortunately, I can't even open my windows at night due to the fact that there is almost always a drunk group of guys hanging out on the front or back porch, blowing smoke, swearing, playing music and tossing beer cans all over. It starts daily at 5pm until around 2 am or later, every night. I don't need a chill pill, I just need the same respect that I give to all my neighbors. What is wrong with wanting that? I'm not a stick in the mud. I root for the Sox & Bears on game days and grill out & have a couple of brews, but I have always respected the fact that I do have neighbors and I chill out by 9pm, just in case they might need to get some sleep for work or the kids have to go to school. So, 109, get ready. Cause I'm stayin right where I am, but you are not going to continue with the bad behavior. It's a new day! I'm taking back my neighborhood!

@Vera, maybe then they are not sec 8, why are they not tossed then?? Maybe they own it?? But you can still get them by all pulling together and making those calls. Sometimes people are afraid to call for Retaliation, but your calls can be anonymous. Keep calling and getting them in trouble for the trouble caused. Eventually it will go away. I did exactly that and my neighbors behind me are gone, loud parties, cops came and actually made arrest, then they split. They owned the home but it foreclosed. @Eldon and Faith, I agree Mike would be the perfect police officer to hire on for the village. Crime is every where the economy is bad and it brings out bad.The village has grown from what it was in the past, I remember the corn fields every where, now it's people every where. Makes a big differance. Lets pull together and take charge, don't close the curtains, open them, pay attention. Help a neighbor. Now Vera, have something to add???

I'm not Vera, Eldon or Faith, but I want a better community! I am ready to start being a more responsible community member and making the place I live "a better place." I had my damn head in the sand for too many years. I can't believe I have tolerated letting undesirables make my family afraid to go out at night & my property value go down. I want to be part of the change! If we all start working together I believe we can turn things around. Let's start taking charge of our homes and the places we go to.

a few years ago, all of us in westbury were told the opening on harwood to Fernwood, could not be closed due to emergencies and that is the way the kids to get to Brooks Middle School. There is so much garbage on Harwood from that opening, that is also on Glengary, Fairwood, Edgehill, Delmar, Cypress and Briarcliff. I see more cops in dunkin donuts than patroling neighborhoods. Unless they live on the street or have family on the street, they VERY RARE are seen on these streets. I have lived here my whole life and seen good and bad. Beaconridge was always not BAD they a few bad seeds, I played there as a kid, but wont let my kids now. As for Fernwood i was around when they built the homes it looked like it was going to be so nice, but it turned to shit quickly. So y hasnt claar done anything to fix the problems. Dont give me the crap that he has so much on his plate. This is his JOB! He has KNOWN about ALL the problems around here, beaconridge, fernwood, westbury, and who knows where else in this town. If we have to start taking over our own blocks than we should get paid just like cops. Our taxes are sky high in this town, and our houses are worth shit right now, cause of all the vadalizing and crap around here. CHANGES all around needs to be done! I am pretty sure not all of beaconridge or fernwood are bad and they need to take there streets back as well. Make it safe for ALL the kids to be out until the street lights come on.

Sarah, If you speak to the mayor personally, you would know what he really thinks. Have you called him or stopped by to see him on your behalf? He speaks to anyone who calls on him. His door and phone is always open. If you say differ I really doub you have tried. Having a neighborhood watch, does not make you a cop and does not authorize anyone to place judgement in your own hands. You are the eyes and ears and let the police handle the rest. Cops do get breaks just like anyone else and where they choose to stop is up to their preferance, coffee sounds good to me.I have been around here for many years and involve myself in community events. I am also proud of where I live, because of the many good people here. Your always gonna find some bad apples no matter where you go. I think our homes have fallen due to the economy and this is worldwide. Do you not read the papers?? Foreclosures every where. Think before blaming others for what others have done. We need people pulling together and not always blaming or always complaining. Goodness that ryhmes. Have a Happy day!!

If the cops won't do anything, I think the neighbors there should is start a "civil" war on these terrorists.

Meaning, every neighbor should be trained in rifle shooting & blow up these jack asses when they see them coming. 2nd amendment still stands.

Goose, for one internet is not capitalized mid-sentence. Second, your ignorance and blatant threat to someone has just got your comments flagged. This is not what this was intended for. Mickey, there is no justice and it would be us sinking to the standards of the people by doing such an act. There is a right way, and a wrong way. Our streets don't need what happened in Florida to happen here. Thats not how this is going to be. Thank you for your input, but a 'civil' war would only be civil if we do this without resorting to more violence.

Gladys, your research is correct. But before any assumptions are made by anyone or yourself I strongly suggest that you read this comment. Yes, I am an convicted felon. I have committed retail theft, and was to support a habit of TWO people. This was for drugs, and I payed my debt in many, many ways. I will not go into specifics of what is behind all of that, its not really anyones business. That was years ago, time has passed. I have completed my parole successfully, I have given back to my community ten fold. Was I wrong for what I did?? Yes. Am I remorseful for what I have done?? Each and every day. The past not only affected myself, but it affected family, friends and caused alot of damage. Sooooo, Gladys, I am not sure what it is that you are trying to prove here with your comment. But unlike some, I dont run and hide from my past. I use it as a stepping stone to make my life better, more productive. Is that what you wanted to hear???????????

Everyone keep running your fingers till your heart is content. To sit there and honestly think your going to affect me with that, your mistaken. To sit on a website and completely show your ignorance and lack of.....well lack of a brain, just proves that some people just don't get it. These are the people that will drag every bit of good in a neighborhood down. I know who I am, I know where I come from. However, I got a right as an American to keep my family, my neighbor, and anyone else from having to put up with what is going on. So please, I am driven on negativity, I enjoy it thoroughly. It makes me wake up in the morning and look forward to each day. I have proved so many wrong in my life, but there's more room on my list. So call me what you will, dump on me all you want. I will stand strong, I will not give ground. And besides..... Grade school children call names on the playground... How old are you??

People on here got a little crazy. Bashing and saying nasties. If someone was once bad or made a mistake and now in life is on a differant path I commend them. So this goes to Chris, you need not argue with these trouble makers. You might be someone that can share your story and put others on the right path.
Troublemakers are like bullies. They only keep doing their thing when they have people to do it to. When there isn't anyone around they get bored and move on. Most troublemakers suffer from some sort of social problem and they just can't get along with other people no matter what people do to try. So don't waste your time arguing or trying to rationalize with them. Just walk away, don't respond. Chris if changes are within you then please refrain from certain words, these words don't make you look good. Keep up the positive with you.By the way, yes, there are 2 differant Veras on here, but the same name used. Best of luck to you and remember, don't respond, let it go.

I live on hardwood drive and have for 50 (yes 50) years. My family is the most impacted by the fence as is it against our property. We will sign the petitionand hope it works but we have seen the fence closed before and they just tear it down. We have people who live on fernwood drive park their cars on hardwood drive just so they don't have to worry about their cars. But since when do we offer free parking, for the residences of fernwood! We have called the police and are told we have to call at 2:00 am (great but people have to work) they block mailboxes, trash pick ups, and yet nothing will be done. I have two handicapped parents and we worry about violence in the area as well as accessibility for for emergency vehicles if needed.

Another incident at 109 Jamestown Lane in Beaconridge. BPD had to come and break up a fight between 2 males in parking lot K at 4 am Saturday morning. About 10 people standing around, along with a baby and 2 small children. I am sure it would have been worse if BPD had not responded so quickly. One male taken away via ambulance. How long do we have to put up with these people? Can't believe I have to put up with their disturbances day in and day out!
