Five Things to Know Today: June 30
Looking for things to do? Stuff to know? People to meet? We've got it all in our "Five Things" feature.
1. Jim Cornelison to Sing National Anthem at Village's Fourth of July Celebration
Jim Cornelison, who can usually be found belting out one of—if not the best—version of the National Anthem in professional sports at Chicago Blackhawk home games will be at the village's Fourth of July Celebration to sing the nation's official song.
Bolingbrook's all-American celebration will be held Monday at the Bolingbrook Golf Club from 3 p.m. to 9:15 p.m., when the fireworks start. Live music and food will be available.

2. VVSD's Schoffstall Set to Leave Office
After serving the Valley View School District for eight years, Supt. Phillip Schoffstall will officially step down today. Bolingbrook High School Principal Jim Mitchem will begin work as the district's next superintendent tomorrow.
Much has changed since his first days. Having initiated facilities upgrades and curriculum improvements in previous school districts, Schoffstall envisioned a completely different mission upon his arrival in Valley View.
“I thought my assessment was needed to reorder the priorities from adults to children,” he said. “I saw a lot of good teachers but the operating systems were geared to the needs of adults.”
Bolingbrook Patch would like to sincerely thank all the work Schoffstall put into the position and wish him the best moving forward. It would also like to wish Mitchem good luck in his new position!

5. "Text4Baby" Program Begins in Will County
The Will County Community Health Center has a new text messaging service that provides free health messages for expectant and new mothers.
"Text4Baby" is an educational program of the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition. The program will send free health tips via text message to mothers.
Interested women can sign up by texting "BABY" to 511411 (BEBE for Spanish). Those who participate in the program will receive three free SMS text messages each week timed to their due date or the new baby's date of birth.
The messages will focus on, among other topics, birth defects prevention; immunizations; nutrition; seasonal influenza; mental health; oral health; and safe sleep.
The program will also connect women to prenatal and infant care services, as well as other resources.
