Hey Mom and Dad: What Holiday Gift Did You Refuse to Buy Your Child?

Parents, Patch wants to hear from you on the questions that get families talking.

Welcome to Hey Mom and Dad—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting.

Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the western suburbs.

What's one holiday gift your kids asked for that you refused to get them, and why?

Take a look at what Patch users throughout the south and western suburbs had to say and join the conversation in the comments section.

Joyce C. Holiday Barbie. I despise Barbie in general, but this one is extra trampy.

Amy B. Baby alive! You have to pay for food for the doll and then it goes to the "bathroom". Uh, I have 2 kids that do that.

Jacki M. A cell phone. TV in her room.  Laptop. She is 6.  My husband and I were entertained at her list. She wants Hello Kitty and LaLaLoopsy dolls, mixed with Justin Beiber. Seems like baby girl is growing up fast!  The biggest technology she's getting is an MP4 player. With Hello Kitty ear phones, loaded with Disney Princess music, AND Justin Beiber. A little of both.

Dawn H. Red Ryder BB Gun. But seriously, an iPhone. Has an iPad, why does a 13y/o need both?!?!

Andie G. The new Wii-U. It took us 5 years to get the regular Wii, I'm not paying hundreds of dollars for my 6 year old to sit on the couch all day!

Aime K. My 5th grader wanted an iPod touch, but I said no way. I don't want her more tuned in to it and her friends than the family. Learned that from experience the hard way. Had to tell grandma no way on that one too, lol. We shall see what happens!

So what's your take? Tell us in the comments.

My daughter is now grown, but if I still had young children I would not purchase any violent viedo games or movies, no weapons of any type, or cell phone until she was at least 10 years old. I do have a niece and I will never buy her anything from the Bratz line. My parents refused to buy me a very popular gift when I was younger, a "pet rock", I'm sure many of the 40+ era will remember them. I had to make my own, I look back now and think, mom and dad were pretty smart after all!

Despiser of Obama, grow up. Americans endured 8 years under Bush's lies and idiocy, we'll survive this last 4 with Pres. Obama. As for this list, most children today are children of excess and to be honest my two have so much that I truly had little to no idea what to buy for Xmas. That in itself speaks volumes for the excess in this country and culture.

Lmao...These are the people you raised,I will tell ya this..my kids have used their iPods for school, for prices, for searching for their cars to keeping in touch with relatives that are out of town...The video games well now that's another story...it's not the artists that create violence..Look at Shakespeare, all of his stories included murder, betrayal, some kind of conspiracy..and most people who read Shakespeare are considered to be educated people...imagine that educated people reading about murder and not committing it...to not get your kids something they like 1 you ignore their specific likes, wants.and try to mold them to yours by buying them what you think they should have..which intern brings in the way the human mind works...Tell them they can not have it..they want it more, even sneak to play it,get it,buy it...education is most important...you can misuse any thing...

Think about this too parents...What we were allowed to do as a kid,or our parents did as children they call felonies today..A child is more confined to their home, yard,or block...The only thing I did not get my kids were the BB guns because it is against the law to shoot BB guns in City of Joliet city limits...Do not need to open the door and see some cop trying to save the world slamming my kids down or shooting them.

One can hardly compare reading Shakespeare to playing a violent video game! It IS the artist who creates the violence, because that is what sells! It is people like you who purchase whatever little Johnny wants so he will "be your friend" rather than you being his parent. I suppose that if they want to read porn, that would be ok in your book of wisdom as well, because heaven forbid you as his parent would not want to "mold them." Last time I looked, the definition of parenting is about molding and educating your children, setting morals and being a proper example, not allowing them whatever they desire because it may alter the way their mind works. Apparently your mind does not work completely functionally, or you wouldn't be making the comments you did. So the only reason you don't allow your kids to use BB guns is because you don't want the cops showing up at your door, nothing to do with the fact that they would be using a weapon that has the sole purpose of hurting or killing a victim? Do you not watch the news or read the paper and see that these "children" who have access to weapons are typically the ones who are mentally unstable and killing innocent people. I think you need to crawl back into your cave.

@maureen...well let's see I bought my kids video games and they have learned to shoot a gun...Now one is a CNA becoming a nurse, one is in 12 now and getting her CNA and becoming a nurse and my boy wants to be an engineer....it is about education lady..and did I say porn? ...I guess from what your saying we should all just stop doing anything, reading, watching tv,or even opening our eyes because there is violence..lol violence is in human nature as love is.it is your job as a parent to here it is.."Teach" your child the difference..Funny how we denounce violence then turn and teach our kids especially boys that " it is your responsibility to protect your family and take care of them" what do you think this involves? Sometimes lady violence is required to protect your family. Mold my kids..lol yeah you mold them then tell them to be quiet, you ignore their input on things you feel they should have no input on..and your the one who raised them..your job is to again " teach" them how to take care of themselves, not to teach them your politics, your beliefs like dragging your kid to church he keeps on telling you he does not want to go to,or voting for the guy you voted for...your job is to teach them to think for themselves,to differentiate meanings,to understand,..to think that your kid did something because of a game you bought is stupid..he did it because you did not teach them the difference between the art and reality...you failed

Aren't you paying attention to the 5 million kids who have access to guns who never shoot anyone? Or just what your media is feeding you?...yeah you know we have this big huge problem with kids killing others with BB guns don't we?just a Fing epidemic..lmao...you obviously have a one sided thinking thing going on and can not see e whole picture...my kids have had video games since before they were born.my 2 daughters were the 2nd and 3rd ladies at Joliet Central to recieve an expert marksman award since Joliet Central had their ROTC program..my oldest was sent to Washington D.C. To go to the White House,To see Congress for a week by herself at 18 ...my girls learned to cook at 8 lady and not just water I mean dinner lady a dinner, they could do laundry at 8 got it? They both got straight A's and on high honor roll..one works at a nursing home right now,2 still in school..my kids probably have a better resume than you do and their only 18 and 19...and guess what?their nothing like me lady.lol not at all I never wanted to be a nurse nor an engineer...nor do I ever..and they had video games, shot guns, used sling shots, whittled wood with knives when we sat around the camp fires..lol..your talking to a man that knows what humans are capable of..remember kids at 8 used to be left by parents to tend to the farm and take care of siblings while dad left for months to find work in the 17 and 1800's not a sheltered child of today's times..I plowed a field with a horse and plow before lady

How about you just crawl back into your sheltered cave out of fear and let the other people deal with reality lady..you just keep your head down and be scared of everything..blame anyone you can not the individual, get rid of artists so we can have nothing, get rid of buildings because they fall, get rid of planes because terrorists drove them into some buildings, get rid of cars because there are hit and runs everyday, get rid of knives because people die from them....you just sit in your cave with nothing and be happy and leave the rest of us who know better alone.

John all communities basically prohibit BB guns being shot in a residential area with good reason. Also many BB guns look like real handguns. Do you blame the Police for drawing down on a kid with a BB gun or if ones pointed at them. I see no problem in that.

Yes I do blame a police officer for drawing down on a kid.lol not if one is pointed at them no..but a kid in the yard yep...if your going to be a police officer that handles people you can not just assume all the time you have to be keen on observation..not a trigger happy nut looking for a reason.lol..BBguns in city limits is stupid, same as banning guns....it is all about education..but it is alsom about knowing your kids..my boy yeah he would probably grab the BBGun to run a dog off if I am not home...don't need it happening..but video games, and IPods..don't get me wrong we have BB guns in the house..but their not the kids.lol usage becomes a question when it's theirs and yours..if it is mine then they know not to touch it through knowledge of no toleration but if it theirs then there is room for discussion as to why?,when?how?...and the arguement "well it's mine"...to pull a gun on a kid with a BBGun then your "Jumping the Gun" and lack observation skills which a lot of people do.How many times you walk by something and not pay attention to it?....which is why the Orange tips were placed on the kids guns....accidental shootings from gang members and same as from police agains kids with toy guns...My boy is not allowed to play with his toy guns in the front yard only the back because of this world we live in..Precautions,checking on your kids, not snooping but outright hand it over type checking and education let's them know there is no games involved from parent to child..

John, I don't need to defend myself to you, however I am a therapist, and have my BA in ECED/ELED, my MA in SPED & PSYC, & a Phd. in Educational Administration & Advocacy. My daughter, was not brought up playing video games or taught to shoot a gun. She graduated valedictorian from Benet Academy, a H.S. that requires academic testing, and accepts the highest scoring students. She started college a year ahead of her peers because she had taken college courses during H.S. She attends an ivy league university on a full academic ride, and is in a Phd. program. What are your credentials John? Violence is NEVER an answer to protecting your family. You must be so proud that your children are 2nd and 3rd marksman from Joliet Central (one of the lowest schools in IL for academics). My child was taught independence and has been cooking, doing laundry and I almost forgot, traveled to 3rd world countries to volunteer & was invited by The President & awarded a Medal of Distinction. (That was sarcasm, in case you didn't recognize it). I am a Dr. who works with families of victims that were killed in tragic events. I'm educated, & hardly sheltered! One final word of advice, you may not want to respond to further comments, you appear ignorant, uneducated, and somewhat delusional. Sincerely, Dr. Maureen

John you are so wrong in your thinking. I praise Officers for the work they do, day in and day out. If they see someone or anyone with what looks like a gun, I support and have no problem with them drawing their weapon . As far as the orange tip, many are removed or painted black. When an Officers sees someone with a BB gun that looks like a real gun, is he just supposed to walk up and say "is that a BB gun or a real one"? Not! Just because a Officers sees a kid on your front yard with a BB gun that looks like a real gun, doesn't mean it's not a real gun. Is a front yard a safe haven for someone with a BB gun or off limits to an Officer? Officers have been shot and killed by kids with what they thought was possibly a BB gun. Better to be safe Officer than a dead Officer. Also if an Officer did draw his weapon with a kid with a BB gun, no harm no foul and Officers are within their legal rights to do so.

You got me all wrong lol I am glad there are police officers, government all of it.and would not want to see not a one hurt,..and did you not read the rest of it...I know what happens weather it be police or gang members or just an average citizen..I make my kids play with All toy guns in the back yard only...but kids are kids and sometimes just do not listen or not pay attention.. Sure I can have a BBGun but what is the point if you can not use it? Now a gun that's for home defense but a BBGun is mainly for playing or did we forget that? And you can not play with it in the city or you get arrested, fined, dealings with court ..sorry I had to break it down and explain it for you...

You just keep being a submissive little citizen and saying that all police actions are justified and don't be crying foul when it happens to your family or kids...not all police actions are justified buddy that's just plain Sheeple talk there... You must be a police officer because your words to all comments on police is basically they are gods and can do no wrong...and if you are an officer now we can plainly see what the hell is going on now...yeah sure it's just oka le dokaly for police to shoot children for BB guns...lmao..

You argue that I am wrong about police shooting kids? Then you argue that I am wrong about that being the reason I don't buy my kids one..lmao....you my friend have issues...just looking for some reason to discredit someone......is at how you think you make yourself look better? Lol you say I am wrong in one comment then agree with me in another lol...and you say I am wrong but who nothing...your like the media..just blurt some dumb shit out to try and dis credit someone en give no evidence,examples...or nothing to back your words..now read my comments everywhere I post full of facts, investigative information,statistics.....not just " you are wrong" lol WTH?

Like I said...we don't want our kids to have violent video games, mess with guns,be violent, watch violent movies....but we honor and praise them when they become soldiers who.....shoot guns, kill people, blow people up,become more violent than the average citizen, commit suicide at an alarming rate, and cause more damage than natural disasters.....Stop being government fed bull crap, stop trying to live the sheltered life and wake up and realize that not showing your kid some sort of violence can be devastating to them if it happens to them...Not saying be violent towards them but to educate them..let them know there is bad guys, let them know what the military is for and what they do,let them know what terrorists do,let them know what police officers do...if you do not teach your kid you can face violence then you have sheltered them to the point where they will not know who to react to the violence and that can be deadly it's self...It's not video games or movies...it's just the world we live in...As I said no wooden for your kids for lying, screaming at you,stealing,..some cop will teach them, beat them, shoot them, tazer them, and drag them in front of a man that will lock them in a cage for years at a time even for life...but don't teach them that either because it is too violent...but know this my kids know it and will not be a problem to society at all.2nurses and an engineer...it's all about education not restriction
