Off-Track Betting Parlor Receives Go-Ahead from Bolingbrook Village Board
The parlor is expected to open this spring at McQ's Sports Bar & Dome in Bolingbrook.
The Bolingbrook village board voted unanimously Tuesday night to give the go-ahead for an off-track betting parlor to open at McQ's Sports Bar & Dome this spring.
The board approved ordinances for a special use permit for the OTB parlor and an amendment to the village's zoning code. The location still needs to acquire a license from the Illinois Racing Board before it can open.
McQ's Owner James McWethy said he hopes to open the facility this spring in time for the Kentucky Derby, though no official opening date has been set.

McWethy acquired the previously-named Ditka Sports Dome last March and renovated the location. The OTB parlor will be a "perfect compliment" to his facility, he said.
He had small concerns about the dingy stereoyptes of OTB parlors, but those went away when he visited other locations in Illinois.
"The concerns people have are unfounded," McWethy said. "If those concers were valid, we would not be doing it...These are all very classy places -- very nice restaurants and sports bars...
I would not want to be involved in anything not first-class."
"A difficult decision"
Mayor Roger Claar said the vote was a difficult decision for him and the village trustees.
"Some people ask why we would want that kind of revenue," Claar said. "I don't see it that way. Fifteen years ago I may have."
Claar said he had been approached for two or three other off-track betting establishments in Bolingbrook over the last 15 to 20 years. He turned down those requests.
His opinion of OTB parlors changed when he visited an OTB in Oak Brook and found a "first-rate establishment."
"If we don't get revenue this way, the other way is to raise taxes," Claar said. "We need to find the resources we can."
Jeff Kras of Hawthorne Race Course, Inc., said an OTB parlor opened in Glendale Heights last spring has taken in $10 million in wagering and provided $200,000 in increased tax revenue, which is evenly split between Glendale Heights and its county.
Kras said the Bolingbrook location, having similar demographics, could expect similar results in its first year.
Expect an "upscale sports lounge"
Jeff Kras of Hawthorne Race Course, Inc., said the Hawthorne Race Course OTB's are "upscale sports lounges" with high-back leather chairs and hi-def TV's.
"We treat our operations as first-class operations," Kras said. If you haven't been to an OTB, you would be "pleasantly surprised" by what you saw, he said.
Kras said OTB demographics are middle-aged, middle class professionals. He said horse racing differs from casinos and other types of gambling because it's a "thinking man's sport."
McWethy agreed that the locations he saw had a "very nice clientele."
Patrons will need to be 21+ to enter the parlor. Like other places of gambling, gambling addiction services will be provided to those thought to be in need of them.
Kras said he would work with Bolingbrook police for security and traffic concerns, especially on big race days.
The parlor is expected to create four full-time jobs.

I've come to the realization over the years, an this conversation just reenforces my belief, that no matter who the leadership team is, and no matter what they decide to do to raise revenue, that someone or some group will always oppose it. Certain people will oppose anything because they are pessimist in every sense of he word. I can't think of one program, event, etc that takes place here in Bolingbrook that has 100% support. The key is at least our current group of leaders are trying to make this village a great place to live in the best way they know how. Most of the complainers just sit on their xxx behinds and do not get involved or do things that would improve the quality of life in our community.

They get to take luxury cruises, expensive dinners at Drury Lane, and river boat gambling. Now that the OTB has been approved, DuPage Twnship will use our tax dollars to pay for the "seniors" to gamble there.
Want to know WHY Czar Clarr and Crew love the "seniors" at DuPage Twnship so much? Because they are a guaranteed voting block.

Rhonda stated FACTS.
One can be arrested but unless they're convicted, they're not guilty of any crime. Where is the convicted records of these people that she has accused of having DUIs?
She also said it was FACT that people in office have an addiction to gambling, are guilty of illegal gambling, are guilty of misusing tax money, participated in shaky shaky (whatever that is)...
If these are FACTS, she should be able to provide some proof. Court records are available to the public so it should be that difficult.
Since she's said that she's running for office is 2015, the people are paying a lot of attention to what she says now so that when they vote in 2 years, they will have a clear idea what type of person they are voting for.
Not sure about DoO but if his comments were removed, it may be because the Patch banned him again. Just like they did with all of his other aliases(Vera, Tom Selleck, Disciple...) I'm sure that Melissa could clarify that for you if you send her an email.

They should be able to explain how they are able to reconcile the utter devastation to families that gambling addiction causes with the measly $200k.

Mike and Leroy are both members of the Knights of Columbus. This is a Catholic organization that uses Casino nights and gambling to raise funds for the church.
It sounds like gambling addiction has touched a nerve with you. Maybe your family has personal experience with it? If so, I'm sorry but to say that all people that gamble are addicts and unethical is going over the edge.

The Catholic church is also known to have protected pedophiles. Should we praise them for that as well?
The Village of Bolingbrook is a community filled with families that are doing their best to raise children in a clean and safe environment. Opening a gambling joint in the same establishment as children golf is reckless.
And yes, as a matter of fact, addiction has touched a nerve because I've seen its devastation first hand. Bringing OTB to Bolingbrook is nothing more than fools gold.
I agree with Jimmy J, how about cutting the bloated budget by $200k.

And Tom (or whatever your name is today), work on your argument. It's weak as hell.
Praising Brown & Gang for being outstanding members of the communty simply means you are their cheerleader. Nothing more. The flaw in your argument is that it fails to address the real COST of having a gambling joint anywhere near children.
If you want to gamble, go to Joliet or Las Vegas. Don't plant the joint in the middle of a community with families.

Rhonda, there is a bar there and it is hoping for more revenue with the OTB. if you would go there once you would understand that. It is not a children establishment but children are welcome there. Las Vegas has children there also. What are you saying here is judgemental. There are not a lot of homes around this business, I don't see your point. As maybe you stopped drinking, doesn't mean everyone has a problem We are adults here and I was totaly amazed by all the comments here...by you. Name calling, I thought you were a better person then this. I see you are not any ones cheerleader. If you don't gamble don't go there. It is not your call, if you didn't want it then why didn't you go to the meeting? No one did, and yes we need every little bit to help during this harsch economy. Heres a link for you.http://www.arlingtonpark.com/trackside/locations
Have a beautiful day!

TMI (or Tina Invergo), Rhonda S no longer lives in Bolingbrook, and I've taken over her BB Patch account. You might want to re-think your argument. She's not here to defend herself, and you don't know who the hell I am.
Care to come up with a better defense as to why having a gambling parlor in the same spot as children learning to play golf is a good idea?
Sounds to me like you haven't been there in a while yourself.

You are arguing with an unknown person who uses the screen name Rhonda. I'm willing to bet "Rhonda" is probably some established MAN in the community that knows a lot of stuff that the powers to be doesn't want known. In order to get his message out, he uses the name "Rhonda" to get you clowns on attack, while he continues to post facts.
I tend to believe what "Rhonda's" writing. Don't you see the trap?

RRS is violating the Terms of Use agreement with the Patch if she is allowing others to post comments with her account.
"Your account is for your sole, personal use. You may not allow others to use your account and you may not assign or otherwise transfer your account to any other person or entity. (If another person or entity wants an account, they can easily sign up themselves.)"
