Plainfield Cancels 4th of July Fireworks

Fireworks for Bolingbrook's Independence Day celebration at the Bolingbrook Golf Club are still scheduled.

The Plainfield Park District has decided to cancel the firework display for its pre-Fourth of July Patriotic Picnic.

Hot, dry weather has made the  too great, according to Plainfield Patch.

"I love fireworks myself," Plainfield Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton said. "Just with the dryness and everything, and we've had a lot more wind than normal too, it's not worth the risk."

Bolingbrook's fireworks are still a go.

The grounds where Bolingbrook launches its fireworks --  -- is pretty wet, said Deputy Chief Trinedad Garza. "They monitor that daily," Garza said. "They also do a pre-fireworks inspection, so there will be no hazards."

While Tinley Park is bringing in irrigation equipment to saturate the areas around fireworks launch and landing sites, Orland Park will have extra personnel on hand for the holiday.

It isn't feasible for Plainfield to bring in water like Tinley Park, Stratton said.

Less than half an inch of rain has been recorded at O'Hare International Airport since the beginning of June, Kevin Birk, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told the Trib. Normally, he said, rainfall totals would be closer to 2.5 inches by now.
