Proposed 2013-2014 Valley View Calendar Includes Earlier Start, End to School Year

The first day of school would be Aug. 16; the last would be May 27 if there are no school days. The first day of school for the 2012-2013 school year was Aug. 22.

The calendar shift means the first semester, including final exams, will end before the district's winter break. High school students currently take their final exams after winter break.

School holidays would include Labor Day (Sept. 2), Columbus Day (Oct. 14), Veterans’ Day (Nov. 11), Martin Luther King’s birthday (Jan. 20), Presidents’ Day (Feb. 17), Pulaski Day (March 3), Good Friday (April 18), and Memorial Day (May 26).

Thanksgiving break would be Nov. 27-29, winter break from Dec. 23 through Jan. 5 and spring break from April 7 to April 13.

A calendar committee recommended the 2013-2014. Certified and classified staff from all grade levels and parents were part of the committee.

The draft will be brought back to the board for approval on Feb. 11.

Anyone wishing to comment on the draft may either submit the comment through “Ask the Superintendent” at www.vvsd.org or by calling Lisa Langer at 815-886-2700, ext. 241.

A copy of the draft is included in the News section at www.vvsd.org.

Why are they staring classes on a Friday and then finishing with that last 1.5hour day the day after Memorial Day? Start Wednesday Aug 14th and get the kids out of school before Memorial day. There will be plenty who won't attend that last day with it falling Tuesday after Memorial Day.

The last day (May 27th) is a full day of school, not just 1.5 hours, as is the first day too.

I didn't catch that about the last day being a full attendance day. This year it is still an early dismissal so that is something new for 2013-2014. I still think a good number of people will extend their Memorial weekend into a vacation and skip that last day.

I wonder if the first day of school is unusually a non-student attendance day. I wonder if they will make the last day (May 27th) also an institute day. Even then, it doesn't make much sense to have staff come in for one day after a long holiday weekend.

Looking at the proposed calender on the vvsd website, Wed and Thurs Aug 14 and 15 are teacher institute days, Friday Aug 16 is the 1st student attendance day and Tuesday May 27 is the last attendance day for students and May 28 is an institute day for teachers.

If they would have the students attend school on either MLK, Presidents or Pulaski Day, they could move the last day for students up to the Friday before Memorial Day.

I know a lot of parents were caught off guard this year with the Spring break schedule. For many years, it was always the week of Easter. It looks like that will no longer be the case.

We love not having Spring break at Easter. It makes travel much easier and cheaper.

I would love to see them start a few days earlier, so that students can be out before Memorial day. Why do they need to be out for Pulaski day? I am all for eliminating Pulaski day, and having them attend classes, so they can be out before Memorial day!

Agree, they should be out before manorial day!! Having only one day left after the long weekend is plain stupid! People could make that a long vacation weekend extended!! I can tell you that my kids would probably not go to school the last day. I also like the High School doing finals before break!

I really think the teachers should go back on Monday and the kids come on Wednesday. That way, unless there is a snow day, everyone is out but Memorial Day!

I agree with eliminating some of te days off these children get. Surrounding districts don't observe Veterans, Presidents, or Pulaski Days. If we get rid of those then out kids can be out by Memorial Day

Why doesnt the school year just begin on Monday instead of Wednesday and then the year can end before Memorial Day?

Looks to me like they are also switching to 4 grading periods. Does that mean 4 sets of official grades per year rather than 2? I'm in favor of that. Grades at the end of grading periods 1 & 2 and 4 & 5 were really nothing more than progress reports anyway.

The quarters are for elementary and middle schools. The high school will still be on semesters,

School begins early enough in August. All the buildings have air conditioning, but let kids be kids and enjoy the remainder of their summer outside.
