Sunday Comic: Is the 'Occupy' Movement Your Cup of Tea?

Are the so-called '99 percent' protesters doing the right thing, or are the voices of dissent drowning out each other?

I am all for the Occupy Wall Street movement. I've been waiting for someone to finally stand up to the nonsense that's been foisted on so many gullible Americans.

No group or person can pretend to side 99% of the people. That's an absurd claim which is just a slick marketing tactic.

Progressives are petrified over losing power next year so they are scrambling to get some status as being "for the people."

Suppose someone said, "I represent the 97% of the people who are straight" and then encourages harassment and discrimination against the 3% that aren't.

Oh dear, are there people still afraid of the "communists" as the bogeymen? If you check out what socialism actually is you won't have to be fearful of that either. You can't possibly be ruled by it. Making up what the protesters are protesting doesn't work either. What free handouts? Read the constitution because it does grant us free speech and the right to protest. There are no bogeymen under that bed.

@Nick - pretty sure the Constitution isn't about smokin' dope in "private" parks at city taxpayers expense.

@Barbara - socialism is the ownership of the means of production by the State. Picture the US Dept of Labor owning the tools my dad (a Union Machinist) needed to do his work each day - and therefore controlling when, where and what work he could do. This is the direct opposite of what the US Constitution and America are all about. btw, the Constitution does NOT grant unlimited rights to occupy private property at public expense and deprive the neighbors of the peace an quiet THEY deserve. Neither my right to free speech nor yours extends to shouting "fire" in a crowded theatre or sponsoring loud parties all night long in residential neighborhoods.

Gary -

Smoking dope = illegal
Protesting = constitutional

I hope that clears things up for you long enough to turn Faux News back on.

Well, this went from a debate to crazy real quick, leave it to petee to comment about how wonderful he is at pushing a camera button when all i stated was that protesting is constitutional.

The lists of things not included in the Constitution is long, but on the short list of what is: "the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Do libunatics feel good when they use kewt terms like "Faux" News?

Does it empower them as much as it does when they categorize people, such as, "Oh, he's a Faux News watcher. I bet he even listens to A.M. radio!"

I don't have a guy. I'm glad peetee is a world class photographer. I'm a world class thinker. The gas story lost me. No one is taking over Gary's father's machine shop and I'm sorry his neighbors are having loud parties. That is a local problem. Please go back to Foxy News and let them continue to scare you. After all, it is almost Halloween.

The protests are about the obscene gap between rich and poor in this country and the fact that the middle class is disappearing. Why should CEOs earn hundreds of times what your average person makes? This figure is debated but is anywhere from 185 to 343 times. How can that possibly be justified? While people are losing their homes and struggling to find employment, the sky's the limit as far as CEO compensation goes.

Your life is not diminished just because someone else makes more. It appears that you assume that there is only so much money to go around and that others may be getting more than their share.

If that were true, economies would never grow, because wealth could not increase but remain static.

Tom, Frimbo and Petee all went to the same school and learned to spell their, as thier. Whenever they use the word their, it is spelled wrong. Or is it the same person. Nay, people wouldn't pretend to be someone else, would they.

I'm assuming that the post that has since been deleted was made by someone named Tom. Duplicate names have been going on for some time now. I'm not naive enough to think that I'm the only Tom that posts here. An easy way to check if the posts are made by the same person is to click on their name. It will bring you to a page that has all of their other posts.

Great debate going on. Jaskie1505 has said pretty much everything that I would have so I've stayed out of this one.

Carry On!

I did not misspell the word 'their.'

I have quoted another who does make that error. Maybe you were keying on that, and in your haste to mock those with whom you disagree (instead of engaging in meaningful dialogue), you included me in your list of bad spellers.

Pteee363 has my vote! Well said on almost all your post's.You have hit the nail on the head .Why are the 99ers backed by the union's,and the reason for the protest's is that the union's know that their day's are coming to an end.,and the crappy policies Obama and the democrat's put in place. Hello 2012 ,you can put a cat or dog to run against Obama ,and he will lose. Brighter day's are ahead ,and the light will come soon enough.Happy ! I corrected my huge blunder. Truth hurts when someone is correct about the issues on OWS and the motive behind it ,and the way union's helped destroyed the middle class ,and America as a whole.I can go on,and on about that issue it's to complicated for an average Joe or Jane to comprehend. Wait just a few .EPA? TAXES?WAGE?HEALTH CARE COST'S?MANUFACTURING LEAVING? RIGHT TO WORK STATE'S? COST OF HOMES IN UNION STATE'S? FOOD COST'S? DELIVERED GOODS? LOOK AT ARE TOLL WAY WHAT THE HECK? TAX TAX TAX to do what ? Much Much more !! Provide more money for the union cause. Why is it that the government unions get's due's from the employee's which are paid for by the tax payers, and then the head of the union's donate 90% to democrate's ?????? So they can keep destroying us.Can someone answer me if i am wrong please ,and give your explanation of why i am wrong . Good Day!

If the forum requires that we expose ourselves and our children to danger like that, then I'll have to leave.

Hank,
When it comes to stories that are cross-published on sites (like this one), it's difficult to moderate because there are many times when the commenter is from another site, not Lemont. I cannot begin moderating commenters from Bolingbrook, Woodridge, Darien, etc.

However, I will pass along your concerns and hopefully my co-editors and I can come up with a solution. I will also add that most people that register with random names like that are not frequent Lemont Patch commenters. I think we've all become intimately familiar with those that comment often.

Again, I'll look into the issue. However, it is 5:15 p.m. Friday, so your patience would be appreciated.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

I wanted to add that I just checked the comment history of the comments you are referring to, and most are from Bolingbrook Patch. Again, I can pass along your concerns, but ultimately it's up to each local editor to moderate and maintain their sites. I work closely with Brian Feldt, the Bolingbrook editor, so I'm sure we can discuss your concerns on Monday when we are both back at work.

Thanks again.

Frimbo,

Unfortunately, it is in our Terms of Use that Patch users cannot use aliases. It's difficult to enforce this, which is probably why no one has said anything before. I run the Lemont site, and it's been an uphill battle trying to moderate the comment boards. But the alias rule is one I have enforced historically.

Thanks,
Amanda

Hi Amanda,

That rule basically leaves forums to the control of the bullies.

I agree that it is very hard to enforce, which makes it useless.

Frimbo

Frimbo,

I would disagree that the rule leaves the forum in the control of bullies. The rule is there to create an open, transparent forum. It's a rule that Patch has operated under since it's following. It's been our policy to ask readers to change their user name from an alias to a real name. If the reader refuses, we reserve the right to suspend their account.

Thanks,
Amanda

"Fiend attacks 'Occupy' protester in her tent"

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/manhattan/zuccotti_perv_Qd8v3hCAnspzJ7VGC9nJZP

"A sex fiend barged into a woman’s tent and sexually assaulted her at around 6 a.m., said protesters, who chased him from the park...

She said that weeks earlier another woman was raped.

“We don’t tell anyone,” she said. “We handle it internally. I said too much already.”"

Jim,

I have acknowledged that we are part of the Huffington Post Media Group, but the site would have grown and evolved with or without HuffPost. The Local Voices blogs, which Arianna Huffington introduced, cover a variety of topics and are not politically motivated. You'll find blogs from Republican officials, Democrats, soccer moms, sports fans, stay-at-home dads, pet lovers and more. We don't discriminate. Those blogs were made to give the residents in our communities a forum to write — regardless of their political, social, economic status.

Arianna Huffington is very much involved in shaping the direction of Patch, but again, it's not political. It's about providing a service to our readers. There are a number of people who have been with Patch since its beginnings that are still very much responsible for shaping the direction of the company: http://www.patch.com/about#editorial_board

And I would say that it's ultimately up to each of the 850 Patch editors to produce content that is fair and balanced.

If Patch can remain (become?) impartial, that would be a FIRST for any media outlet run by progressives with an agenda.

Enough time has passed and I have seen enough! They have the right to assemble and I respect that. However, assemble does not mean live in the streets or on public property. There are zoning laws for every kind of property but public property...maybe it is time to write something up and get these creeps to respect our right so we can continue to respect theirs.

Respect for others is not part of their agenda. They are a group-think movement which continually takes small steps towards more extreme behavior. Their leadership has a well-though out agenda and technique to manipulate unsuspecting people to be used as tools in their program.
