More "humor" at the expense of a person the cartoonist doesn't really know. This kind of personal smear reminds me of the louts who terrorized school hallways with taunts of fatso, four-eyes, shorty, dumb jock, dumb blonde. If God gave me an artistic gift I swear I'd use it for something positive and encouraging.
Thanks for your comment, Stan. I would argue that I don't have to know Trump personally to be able to form an opinion about this aspect of his personality (self-infatuation), given his habit of tireless self-promotion and the flaunting of his ego.
You think a cartoon about Trump and his well-known ego is a "personal smear" on the level of school bullying? I find that an incredible charge (which is the only reason I'm responding at length here). Trump himself has used the public's perception of his huge ego to to his advantage for years. He revels in it, exaggerates it and profits from it! What's more, he markets himself as the ultimate bully.
I can't imagine a world in which cartoonists/humorists/satirists aren't allowed to poke fun at politicians and other powerful people who say and do foolish things. What you seem to be advocating is censorship, which is a very dangerous concept in a democratic system.
I agree with you when you say the world needs more examples of "something positive and encouraging." I only wish more of our politicians and others in position of power were providing that. When they provide the opposite, they need to be called out for it.
Trump literally makes his living these days via his overhyped and overinflated ego. If he, or any other celebrity, doesn't want to be made fun of for being a celebrity, perhaps they have chosen the wrong profession.
In addition, comparing this to school bullying is laughable. First and foremost, Trump is not in school, nor is he compelled to go there, either by law or by his parents. Most bullying takes place by those who have some sort of popularity and the victims tend to be the weak/powerless.
It could very easily be argued that Trump himself is a media bully and all of us are his victims.
My thoughts are that he is a self-serving clown and even giving him attention in cartoons that make fun of him is more than he deserves.
Stan, not sure why the over sensitivity to this cartoon or others like it. I am totally against bullying but cartoons which poke fun at the people who are in the public spotlight, especially those who chose the public spotlight are warranted and expected. Those is seek to stay in the public eye agree to the unwritten law that you are fair game, for commentary, both good and bad.
I've poked fun at Obama in a number of cartoons for Patch. (They can be found in the archives). Recently, the Republican presidential candidates have had much of my attention. No lack of material there.
I'm an equal-opportunity cartoonist, and not strictly a political cartoonist either. I like to have fun with a wide variety of topics (pop culture, sports, modern life and more).
There are plenty of websites that cater to your anti-Obama, anti-democrat, pro-republican views.
The cartoonist made it clear that his work is directed anywhere he feels is deserving. He's the artist. It's his work. You don't need to foist your agenda on everything.
In addition, every remark I've ever read by you gets turned into you arguing for your political preference's agenda or against the agendas you do not agree with, even if the originating article is/was not politically biased in any way.
Lemont Patch is a community news site. It doesn't and should't have to be a political soapbox.
You're doing yourself, your community, and the political party you identify with a disservice.
Chuck, maybe a good cartoon down the road would be one of all the extreme, but thin skinned bloggers on the patch who like to voice opinions but not be opposed at the same time.
All the local Patch papers in this country were purchased last year by a George Soros affliate look who owns these papers ,and then you will see the agenda behind it.
Actually, AOL owns Patch and Soros Fund Management LLC sold more than half its ~$12 million stake in AOL
So not only does Soros not "run" Aol or Patch for that matter, he seems to be divesting himself of even his fund's investment share of it. It's important to mention that his fund did not do the same with Yahoo!, a competitor of Aol, that the Soros fund is sticking with (for now).
Even when Soros' fund had 12 million (now half of that as stated above), that's not a controlling figure anyway and therefore your belief that Aol/Patch is part of some vast liberal conspiracy to create some sort of socialist hegemony, patently erroneous.
Read what i said affiliate ,and not one joke of our great leader Pat Quinn not one .What a joke Illinois has one of the highest unemployment rate of any state 10.2% and the second highest tax rate .If a dog has the same bark over and over and never really changes his bark .Wouldn't you still call him or her a dog ,and that is not a conspiracy it's a fact. The liberal media will try all they can this year to distort the fact's .They know their day's are coming to an end.
Tom,
Your math seems to be a little inconveniently off. First, our unemployment is at %9.8 percent. This .4% is not inconsiderable due to the population of our state (one of the highest). It is also dropping, so perhaps the figure you quoted was simply old.
Second, our state tax is not the second highest or even near it. See this table for clarification.
Minnesota, a well-known known republican/conservative state, has much higher state taxes than us. Just sayin'.
In addition, "the days coming to an end" type of blustery comments have been made since a week after our first democratic election in the United States. When it comes down to brass tacks, neither party really differs essentially. The politicians use talking points (abortion, family values, religion, etc) while they are campaigning, but rarely do much about anything, including the "real" issues like education, economy, and foreign relations (among others) than retain the status quo. Some policies may flip to the "other" side depending on the current cycle, but these almost always shift back to the other side or come to rest firmly on the center.
Basically, what I am attempting to say in my terribly long-winded ranting and raving, is that the politicians serve the politicians, not the people who have elected them and it has always been that way and I see very little chance it will change anytime soon.
Please don't give a number from Minnesota .Illinois has the highest tax not just State tax.We have so many hidden taxes that the average consumer does not know.People have to wonder why are gas is the highest in the US not including Hawaii ,you probably would have said no Hawaii has a higher average. We have liqor tax, gas, electric, property, cigarettes, nicor natural gas, cell phone ,and how about that great toll way .So i am not here to argue on politics everyone has an opinion. So just make fun allittle bit on behalf of our state that has been going down the tubes in job loss ,education and quality of life. The dummycrates who lead our state to financial ruins 56 Billion dollars of unfunded pension liabilties wow. You should do a cartoon of Quinn squeezing the Illinois tax payers of all their wallets and have Illinois sinking like a ship because it is. Who can tax all of 1% at 100% it would run our Government for three days.Funny
Tom,
Perhaps you should be a cartoonist yourself instead of telling other cartoonists how to do their job.
One suggestion if you do though. Try to get your "jokes" across with as little printed word as possible. Otherwise your points might get lost in translation.
How about Tom copies and pastes his comments above the next time the Patch has an "Add a Caption" contest. Then, we all can see if his words are funny coming out of the talking dog or baby or whatever they come up with nest.
I don't know why the conservatives are getting so wound up about Trump. He's not really a Republican operative. He seems to only come out politically when he's promoting his show. He's in it for his own brand (his TV show) and not the party. Besides, do Republicans really want to hang their hat on a guy who's been married four times? Is marrying hot chicks, then leaving them once they become mothers to your children really a family value?
