Valley View Revises New Security Measures to Allow Food, Visitors
Valley View School District 365U Superintendent James Mitchem will hold a town meeting Thursday to discuss the new security measures.
Valley View School District 365U officials have revised the district's new security regulations regarding food and visitors.
The district released a list of new safety and security measures Monday following the elementary school shooting in Newtown, CT.

The district previously barred all food from being brought into the classroom; now only home-made food is prohibited while store-bought food is allowed. School officials will also be able to bring food to their classrooms and parents can drop off lunches to their children.
Valley View placed a moratorium Monday on adult access to students during the school day and for before school breakfast programs while its visitor procedures were being reviewed.
In an e-mail Tuesday, Superintendent James Mitchem said community volunteers and visitors will be admitted. Each visitor will be required to sign in, state the purpose of the visit and sign out when leaving. Visitors will be restricted to the area in which the event or the volunteer effort is taking place. School administrators will set the parameters for each visit. All current activities during school and after school will continue as planned.
Mitchem said there was some concern and confusion about locking classroom doors during school. He clarified the doors would only be locked on the outside.
Mitchem will hold a town hall meeting Thursday to discuss the new procedures and general safety issues for the district. The meeting will start at 6 p.m. at Lukancic Middle School, 725 Normantown Road in Romeoville.

They have done a great job so far. I appreciate the safety guard at RHS. I see them as the front line of the school. This makes us feel much better as a community of parents and concerned citizens. May God's peace be with Newtown and each family affected by this unthinkable, unnecessary act of terror.

So I guess only positive comments get to stay up???

I'm not sure where your comment went. I replied to it and didn't touch it. Valley View said they're aware of the rumor and the police said there's no credible evidence that there's a threat. They are on heightened security.

Melissa, what happened to Elden Laffoon's comments under the "Dick's Sporting Goods" article? I wanted to add a few comments.

What are they doing about the rumor? Are they announcing for kids to come and talk about it and if they know who said it? This kid needs to be expelled! Kids already are insecure with all that has happened and going on, they need to pin point who this kid is. I'm going to have a mess on my hands on Friday morning.

They can't punish everyone with a Twitter account, which is where this whole thing started. Hundreds of kids (and sadly, adults) have taken this rumor and flown with it. It gets more overblown and exaggerated every day. There is another article on Patch that explains that they know of the situation and that there is no credible threat. But I know that they talked to lots of kids about where the info came from, and it was all he-said that she-said that he-said kind of stuff. But this is exactly what some of the kids that perpetuate the rumor want - to get parents in an uproar so they don't send their kids to school.

I really can't believe parents were complaining about not being able to bring lunch to their kids. Our children don't need parental disruptions during the day. The most important thing for our schools to do is keep our children safe and if banning visitors during the day is something they want to do then I think they should. You would think that after 26 innocent children and adults loose their life people would agree with the measures our district is taking. Instead they find a reason to complain about it. People really amaze me. If something were to happen in our school the parents would be the first to complain that the school didn't do enough.

I think it was worded funny, I think people thought their kids couldn't bring their lunch to school at all. I don't think that is how they meant it to come out. So people wigged out about it. Some kids have to bring their lunch to school because of allergy.
But a kid out right saying he is going to do something, even if he is just talking out of his ass, should be punished.

I really hope who ever is making the threat is punished. I can understand the need to drop off lunch if a child forgets it, other than that the children should not be disrupted. We need to make sure our children are safe during the day!!!!

There is no credible threat - just lots of rumors. So-and-so's friend's cousin's sister said she saw it on Twitter. This has happened before - once it was on Halloween. Rumors at BHS fly like an eagle in the wind. Any coincidence that the date corresponds to the last day of school before break? I'm quite sure that if there was a credible threat that our children would not have school that day.

Lettuce, where do you get your info??? How do you know that for sure it is not a real threat? I'm just wanting more info on this, my daughter is a mess and is refusing to go. How do I send her, then something does happen!! I may as well dig my grave now, because I wouldn't be able to live with myself. Also I probably need to add that my daughter hates to miss school, so she is not just using this as an accuse to miss. She is scared to death. Who is anyone to say it is not a threat

If a child fears for their life, because of something another said, that is enough of a credible threat. And from what I have heard a lot of children feel the same way my child does!

Also my child keeps saying that they are not asking people to come to talk to anyone with concerns or info, they just keep saying they know of the threat and they have added security!!

My daughter was encouraged to go speak with an administrator, which she and her friend did. Then I spoke with two administrators and the head of security. THAT is where I got my info. Good enough for you?

Speaking from personal experience, my two little ones seem to be adjusting well to the new security policy. They are not afraid, and actually like the new security guy at their school. Pioneer Elementary/VVSD sent home a flyer explaining in great detail the new policy, and held a town hall meeting last nite. (unfortunately the snow storm prevented many from attending, including myself)
The district has done its due diligence. Job well done.

I actually emailed the district about the threat and the superintendent emailed me back regarding the issue. My daughter is in school today, there was added security when I dropped her off. Even though they found who started the rumor, they still took extra precautions today. I am thankful that even though they found the rumor was not credible they still took action to keep our children safe. That is what is important.
