Claar Explains Why Trustees Always Vote 'Yes'

Trustees are not "puppets," Trustee Joseph Morelli announced at the village of Bolingbrook meeting last week.

The village of Bolingbrook swore in its newly elected trustees last week, presenting an opportunity for some interesting commentary from the trustees and Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar.  After Maria Zarate, who replaces Sandy Swinkunas, and Joseph Morelli, an incumbent, were sworn in, Morelli told the public that trustees are not "puppets."  Trustees are "criticized occasionally for always voting yes," Claar said during the meeting, according to the Chicago Tribune.  But the consistent, unanimous votes and "lack of trustee discussion on most town agenda items was a reflection of the village government's efficiency," Claar said.  The committees that make recommendations to the board handle those discussions, Claar said.  "So when it gets to …

Cyber Attack Temporarily Shuts Down Will Courts Website

Luckily, the Will County website with court information remains intact, according to Sun-Times Media reports.

The Will County Courts website is currently experiencing down time, following a recent cyber attack, Sun-Times Media reports. Unknown hackers infected the site with malware and additional coding last Friday, Courts Administrator Kurt Sangmeister told reporters. Fortunately, this particular site is separate from the court website site that contains information on Will County cases. It contains basic information such as parking info, judge profiles and driving directions.  The website will come back online as soon as it’s bugs are fixed, Sangmeister said.  Get the full story from the Sun-Times Media

Is Tom Cross Considering State-Wide Office Run?

The House Minority Leader isn't confirming or denying reports he may return to his roots as a prosecutor.

State Rep. And House Minority Leader Tom Cross of Oswego may be considering a run for Illinois Attorney General. According to the Capitol Fax blog written by Rich Miller, Cross has been asked by State Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka and Congressman Aaron Schock of Peoria to consider entering the race if the state’s current top prosecutor Lisa Madigan decides to run for Governor in 2014. Cross appeared on WJOL radio Tuesday and would not deny the possibility of entering the race. Cross previously worked for eight years as a prosecutor in the Kendall County State’s Attorney's office. The only other Republican to consider a run for Attorney General has been State Rep. Jim Durkin of Western Springs, according to Capitol Fax. Other well-known …

Medical Marijuana Bill Passed by Illinois Senate; Quinn Last Hurdle

Passed by a 35-21 vote, the bill now goes to the desk of Gov. Pat Quinn, who has not yet said whether he intends to sign it.

By a vote of 35-21, the Illinois Senate approved legislation on Friday that would allow doctors in the state to prescribe marijuana as pain relief for severe medical conditions. The bill now goes to Gov. Pat Quinn for his signature. According to the Chicago Tribune, the bill covers 33 specific conditions—including multiple sclerosis, cancer and HIV infection—and includes several controls, with a four-year trial program, dosage limits, fingerprinting, background checks and licensed dispensing centers. “This bill is filled with walls to keep this limited,” the paper quoted sponsoring Sen. Bill Haine (D-Alton), who urged lawmakers to pass the legislation as a compassionate measure for those suffering with extreme pain. In opposition, Sen. …

Letters to the Editor

Letter: Bolingbrook Taxes 'Ridiculous,' 'Wasteful Spending'

One resident says his property taxes rival those of homes worth twice as much.

I purchased my home in 2003 for $269,000. I put another $50,000 into the house for improvements over the years. According to Zillow, my home is now worth $215,000. My taxes this year in total were $8,900--hard to believe. My taxes went up this year even though my home value dropped $45,000. I have friends who own a $500,000 house in the northern suburbs who pay just a bit more than me. Please share how ridiculous Bolingbrook's taxes are, wasteful spending. John Pemberton

Bolingbrook to Apply for $1 Million in Flood Aid

Illinois towns can apply for state and federal assistance to cover costs from last month's flooding.

Bolingbrook will apply for nearly $1 million in assistance to cover the cost of flooded homes and damaged public buildings, according to the Chicago Tribune.  Both the Bolingbrook dog pound and a treatment plant's electrical system were damaged in the April flooding, and about 75 homes suffered some degree of damage, the Trib reported.  "Very few" people were affected by the flooding, according to Bolingbrook Public Works Director Michael Drey. But for those who were affected, the damage was "dominating."  --- Sign up for our daily, e-newsletter.  Like Bolingbrook Patch on Facebook.

Illinois Pension Reform: How Did Your Representative Vote?

The Illinois House Thursday approved a controversial plan to eliminate the state's $100 billion pension debt.

The Illinois Senate may soon vote on House Speaker Michael Madigan’s pension reform plan that passed the House Thursday. Sign up for our daily email newsletter Like us on Facebook. The bill passed by a vote of 62-51 and seeks to eliminate the state’s $100 billion retirement system debt. Illinois ranks dead last in the nation when it comes to funding its public pension plan, according to WBEZ. The bill asks state workers for less in future cost-of-living increases, an increase in the retirement age for workers under the age of 46 and asks for more money to be taken from state employee paychecks. The bill may have difficulty making it through the Senate where Senate Leader John Cullerton supports a different plan that gives workers the …
