The second annual Mitten Tree holiday collection of winter gear for children is under way at Bolingbrook’s Fountaindale Library.

The Kiwanis Club and Power Connection are working together to collect winter gear to ensure children in the community are warm this winter, said Fountaindale Library Graphics Assistant Sabrina Smallwood in an email to announce the program.

“The library is joining them in their efforts and (is) collecting hats, mittens and scarves,” Smallwood said. “If you would like to donate, please place (items) in the donation box in the lobby and the library staff will hang (some of the items) on our special Mitten Tree.”

Smallwood said the last day to donate is Jan. 2.

McGEE TORNADO EFFORT: The Jamie McGee Leadership Club has launched a drive to collect school supplies, food, clothing and toiletries for the victims of the tornadoes that struck in Illinois in November.

The Bolingbrook elementary school is collecting crayons or markers, colored pencils, activity books, general school supplies, non-perishable foods, new or gently used clean clothing and toiletries, according to a news release from the Valley View School District. Monetary donations also will be accepted.

A drop box is located in the school cafeteria. Community members also may drop off items in the school office, located at 179 Commonweath Drive, Bolingbrook. The supply drive continues through Friday, Dec. 6.
