Home ownership: It's part of the American dream.

And according a study by NerdWallet, if you're going to buy a house in Illinois, Bolingbrook is one of the best places to do it.

The village was No. 16 on NerdWallet's list of "Best Places for Home Ownership in Illinois," ranking behind towns including Plainfield, Romeoville and Oswego.

According to the rankings, NerdWallet looked at three main questions:
  • Are homes available?
  • Can you afford to live there?
  • Is the area growing?
NerdWallet looked at 121 places in Illinois, and towns were scored based on homeownership rate, selected monthly owner costs, median household income and population change from 2010-12. Bolingbrook's overall score was 69.2.

While Bolingbrook didn't make the top 10, towns that did include Romeoville Lockport and Tinley Park.

Bolingbrook? You have got to be kidding! My homes value is down over 35% since I purchased it in 1999. Taxes and crime are on the rise. The school district is in turmoil. Additionally, there are 802 current foreclosures: http://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sale/Bolingbrook-IL/fore_lt/pmf,pf_pt/10484_rid/days_sort/41.749031,-88.021603,41.622116,-88.178844_rect/11_zm/. Romeoville is even less desirable.

That's because no one wants to live in Bolingbrook and the houses are cheap!

Can't really speak about the rest of Illinois...but, I like living here and have no intention of leaving. There are definitely issues that need to be addressed, but I suspect you will find that where ever you go.

They only looked at 121 towns, but there are 1,299 municipal governments, 102 counties, 2,731 municipalities and townships, 912 public school systems, and 3,249 special districts in Illinois.
