February-March Classes & Events at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital

The list of programs offered to local residents runs the gamut from Heartbeat for Health to Exercise and Fitness.

Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital will host the following events during February and March. To register for classes and events, call (630) 856-7525, or register online at www.keepingyouwell.com/abh, clicking on “Education and Events.”

Heartbeat for Health: Held 6-8 p.m. Feb. 11, Bolingbrook Park District. Hit the floor to get your heart pumping. Participate in exercise demonstrations, Zumba class, other workout activities and sample healthy snacks. Bring your friends. The class is free, but registration is required.

Get Cholesterol Down Now: 6:30 p.m. Feb. 19. Learn how to reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides through your food choices during this free event. Topics covered include label reading, meal planning ideas, food preparation, and choices for healthy fats and high-fiber foods. The class is taught by registered dietitians.

Heart to Heart: 6:30 p.m. Feb. 25. Dr. Nick Stella, board-certified interventional cardiologist, will discuss the latest information on heart disease, heart screening tests and tools available to reduce your risk of heart disease. Join us for a free evening of education and a heart-healthy, light dinner. Space is limited and registration is required.

It’s not all in your head, it’s in your gut: 6:30 p.m. March 18. If you have irritable bowel syndrome, you know how disruptive it can be. Join Dr. Sameer Barkatullah, board-certified gastroenterologist, for a free discussion on causes of the disease, as well as prevention and treatment.

Weight-Loss Surgery, A Serious Approach to a Serious Problem: 6:30 p.m. March 26. Have you been unsuccessful at diet and exercise programs? And do you have obesity-related health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, or GERD? Join Dr. Vafa Shayani, a board-certified  surgeon, for a free discussion of weight-loss surgery, LAP-BAND® procedures and more.

Knee Screening: 5-7 p.m. March 27. Knee problems are one of the most common injuries today. Have your knee problem or injury assessed by board certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. John Lee and PT Solutions physical therapists. Take home tips on managing common knee problems and an exercise program. Registration is required for this free event.

Heart Smart: Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and cholesterol ratio: $35

Diabetes Check: A1c measures the amount of sugar in the blood: $30

Sweetheart: Lipid Profile, A1c, and blood typing: $40

Heart Score:  Includes a complete cardiac risk assessment, total cholesterol test, HDL, blood pressure assessment, blood sugar test, body fat, personal lifestyle analysis, and EKG. Valued at $400, during American Heart Month, the cost is just $50.

Heart Scan (calcium score): Using a CT scanner, this test s for calcium buildup of plaque on the artery walls. It is used to detect coronary artery disease and, if that is present, it can determine the severity. The cost is $49. Childbirth classes

Prepared Childbirth Class: Learn about childbirth as a natural process and discuss relaxation and breathing techniques, pain management, epidurals, variations in labor, and cesarean births. Taught by certified Lamaze instructors. Tour of the Women’s Care Center included.

Baby Care Basics: Learn about techniques for calming fussy babies, breastfeeding, bottlefeeding, diaper changing, cord care, circumcision, and overall safety.

Infant and Child CPR: 6:30-9 p.m. Jan. 22, Feb. 20 and March 19. Cost, $20. Help your child’s first year be a safe one. An American Heart Association certified instructor covers topics such as choking, rescue breathing, CPR and SIDS, and provides safety tips to prevent accidents at home. Space is limited.

Lactation Consultant:  To schedule a private appointment or talk with a board-certified lactation consultant, call (630) 312-4234 and leave a message. There is a charge for a one-on-one consultation.

Breastfeeding Class: This class is recommended for families interested in learning about breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. A board-certified lactation consultant will help you prepare, focusing on the “how-to” aspects of breastfeeding.

Breast Pump Rentals:  Electric breast pump rentals are available atAdventist Bolingbrook Hospital. Our board-certified lactation consultant can guide you in your decision to use this equipment, as well as explain how the equipment works. Breast pumps are also available for sale.

Support Groups

Bariatric Support Group:  For those who have had bariatric surgery and their families. This free support group is held the third Tuesday of every month. Call (630) 856-7525 to learn more.

Breastfeeding Support Group: A board-certified lactation consultant is available to offer you practical suggestions and support. Bring your baby and favorite pillow and join other mothers for a free, informal discussion of breastfeeding concerns.

Cardiac Support Group: A free support group that meets the third Tuesday of every month. Call (630) 856-7525 for more information.

Diabetes Support Group: Held the third Tuesday of every month. Attendance is free. Call (630)856-7525 to learn more.

Look Good, Feel Better: Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, this free program is designed for newly diagnosed female cancer patients. To register or to learn more, call (630)856-7525.

Exercise and Fitness

Pulmonary Rehab: Structured exercise and education program for adults living with lung disease. Physician order required. Call (630) 312-5920.

Cardiac Rehab, Phase III: For recent Phase II graduates, those with a history of heart disease, or those seeking to prevent heart disease. Physician order required. Call (630) 312-5920.
