Synopsis: Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (251–183 BC), the musical tells the comical story of a slave named Pseudolus in a desperate attempt to win his freedom. He does this by attempting to help his young master, Hero, earn the love of a courtesan, Philia. Meanwhile, Pseudolus has to outsmart Hero's parents, the slave-master, Lycus, and the captain of the army that has already paid for Philia, Miles Gloriosus. Also, an old man, Erronious, is desperately searching for his lost children. The plot displays many classic elements of farce, including puns, the slamming of doors and cases of mistaken identity. The title derives from the line that vaudeville comedians often used to begin a story: "A funny thing happened on the way to the theater".
