The Weekend Ramp Up: Have a Ball in the Fall

Patch has the pulse of the community. So we're sharing our knowledge with our readers. Here are five things to do this weekend.

Fall is here and that means time is running out to get dirty with some outdoor activities.

Sure, once the snow hits the ground, you can start looking forward to sledding, but Fall only lasts so long. So we suggest you get out and enjoy it.

Here are five suggestions on what to do this weekend:

1. Go get a pumpkin. It is Halloween season after all.

There are plenty of places to find a pumpkin, but only one that boasts the history that Johansen Farms can. The farm has been around since 1979 and has thousands—literally thousands—of pumkins for you and your family to pick from. The gant complex that sits off of Boughton Road also features a child-friendly petting zoo that makes Johansen Farms a must before it closes for the season.

2. Take a drive and enjoy the changing of the leaves.

It may sound like a simple task—corny even—but wasting some gas on an hour trip to enjoy the beautiful colors of the leaves may turn out to be money well spent. The leaves won't sstay on the tres for long, so you might as well enjoy it will you can.

3. Road trip! Watch the Raider football team in action.

The Bolingbrook High School Football team needs just one more win to secure a playoff spot. And they'll need all the support they can get when they travel to Lincoln-Way East, the top rated team in the Southwest Suburban Blue Conference. The Raiders will look to get back on the winning track after Homewood-Flossmoor broke Bolingbrook's three-game winning streak last week.

4. Sunday is for football...and baseball in October.

Head on over to Tailgaters Sports Bar & Grill for one heck of a sports day. All four of the League Division Series are playing—the Tampa Bay Rays at the Texas Rangers, the Philadelphia Phillies at the Cincinnati Reds, the Minnesota Twins at the New York Yankees and the San Francisco Giants at the Atlanta Braves. Of course, it wouldn't be a Sunday in October if it didn't feature football, and the NFL has quite a schedule, too, including the Chicago Bears at the Carolina Panthers. Gametime is set for noon.

5. Last call for your fishing fix.

Saturday marks the Bolingbrook Park District's Last Chance Trout Derby. Head on over to Hidden Lakes Historic Trout Farm for some quality fishing time before the weather becomes too cold. The derby is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and costs $12 per person.
