Yumz Gourmet Frozen Yogurt to Open in Bolingbrook

The self-serve frozen yogurt location will open in mid- to late August.

Yumz Gourmet Frozen Yogurt is coming to .

It will be the first frozen yogurt shop in the village and will open in mid- to late August at 1235 West Boughton Road.

The location is a franchise owned and operated by the Visel family. Kevin Visel, a former wedding photographer, will manage the Bolingbrook location. Visel's father, Daniel, is the main franchise investor and his sister, Lauren, will manage a South Elgin location.

Yumz Gourmet Frozen Yogurt opened its first store in Crystal Lake in 2010, and their second in Lake in the Hills in July 2011.

The family is launching a location in Plainfield and is looking to open in Lombard, Warrenville and Addison, as well. Yumz hopes to add 25 locations in the Chicago area in the next two years and 75 in other U.S. markets, according to a press release.

“Frozen yogurt is really taking off,” Kevin Visel said. “It’s just started popping up in the Midwest. We really liked the idea of something that was family-centered, and it’s more nutritious than some other options out there.”

The Visel family found Bolingbrook while loking for a “good community” it could become a part of, Visel said. Yumz is already a sponsor for the summer reading program.

“The self-serve frozen yogurt concept is not in Bolingbrook yet,” Visel said. “We wanted to be the ones to bring it there…We came across a space that would be a perfect fit across from a movie theater and other dining."

Yumz is a self-serve frozen yogurt establishment. You can pick from 14 different flavors of yogurt and fill your cup with as many toppings as you like, from fruit to cereal and candy. Your cup is priced per ounce.

Yumz cycles through 70 total flavors and always offers sugar-free yogurt, a tart option for the “frozen yogurt purists,” regular yogurt flavors and sorbet. All yogurt flavors are non-fat.

Visel convinced the company to add the sorbet option in honor of his daughter, who can’t have dairy.

“If I brought my family here, it would be really difficult for one of the family members to be excluded,” Visel said. “Now families like mine will be able to enjoy a treat together.”

The store will also feature free Wi-Fi and indoor and outdoor seating. Store hours will be from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Flavors you should try: Root beer or key lime

Atmosphere: Expect a fun, comfortable atmosphere, Visel said. “It’s a friendly place.”
