Looking for things to do? Stuff to know? People to meet? We've got it all in our "Five Things" feature.

1. Will County Executive Urges Gov. Quinn to Reinstate Regional Superintendent's Pay

Will County Executive Larry Walsh, in conjunction with Metro Counties of Illinois, sent a letter to Gov. Pat Quinn asking that salaries for the state’s regional superintendents be reinstated.

The letter references Quinn’s line-item veto of the salaries for the 44 elected officials statewide that occurred about two months ago. It asks for an “immediate resolution.”

"Many of us are astonished that a resolution to this issue has not been reached given the important role these superintendents play in the Illinois public education system," the letter said.

2. Sun-Times Editorial Board Stands Up for Drew Peterson

The Chicago Sun-Times editorial board believes alleged wife-killer should be released from prison.

From a Sun-Times editorial

We believe it’s time to free Peterson from the Will County Jail, where he has been held without trial for two years and three months, and put him under less restrictive house arrest. To keep him in jail while prosecutors plod through yet another round of pretrial motions is to deny him his constitutional right to be free, in the words of the Eighth Amendment, of “cruel and unusual punishments.”

4. Law Firm Says Eminent Domain Action Could Get Costly

Bolingbrook and four neighboring communities, including Romeoville,  thanks to legislation that Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed into law Friday.

Those five communities will now likely look to take action against Illinois American Water and overtake the pipeline that carries Lake Michigan water from Bedford Park to the west suburbs via eminent domain.

Mayor Roger Claar says the agency would lower residents' water bill. Illinois American Water says Bolingbrook can't prove that and in the meantime, will be racking up lawyer bills while using eminent domain

At least one federal eminent domain blog agrees with IAW. From Eminent Domain and Condemnation:

The company correctly states that eminent domain will be a hugely expensive, non-productive battle for both sides.

These communities should make a serious attempt to negotiate with Illinois American to avoid the uncertain costs of litigation. Otherwise, they risk losing any alleged benefits from this “publicization” of water service.
