Five Things to Know Today: Sept. 12

Looking for things to do? Stuff to know? People to meet? We've got it all in our "Five Things" feature.

1. It's Homecoming Week at Bolingbrook High School

administrators set the high school's homecoming week for Sept. 12-17. “Mardi Gras, Raider-style”—the week's theme—will culminate with a pep rally and football game on Sept. 16 and the Homecoming Dance on Sept. 17.

The entire week will be “spirit week” with a different theme every day. Monday is Tacky Day. Tuesday is Character Day. Wednesday is Nerd Day. Thursday is Twin Day. And Friday is Spirit Day.

The annual Powder puff football game will take place at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 in the BHS football stadium. Admission is $1. Fans bringing a canned food donation will be admitted free. All money collected and food donated will go to the Bolingbrook Food Pantry.

The Raiders tackle Joliet West in Friday night’s football game with sophomores scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. and varsity at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday night’s dance will be from 7 to 10 p.m. in the BHS fieldhouse. AudioWest Entertainment will be featured. Tickets, on sale at the BHS Bookstore before and after school only, are $15 per person if purchased on Sept. 7 or 8, and $20 per person if purchased between Sept. 12 and 15.  Ticket sales end after school on Thursday, Sept. 15.  No tickets will be sold at the door. Guest request forms can be picked up now in the Bookstore for non-BHS students. Guest request forms must be turned and approved by 2 p.m. Sept. 7 before tickets can be purchased.

2. Did You Miss Our Birthday?

Over the weekend, Bolingbrook Patch celebrated it's first anniversary of being live online.

We've come a long way from when we first launched. The site looks different, feels different and for all intents and purposes, is different.

Readers have become accustomed to calling us The Patch instead of just Patch. My response? So long as you can remember the URL and read our stories, you can call it whatever you'd like.

Readers have gone from asking when our print edition comes out — I still get this one every now and then — to making Bolingbrook Patch their go-to source for all things Bolingbrook.

But above all, Bolingbrook Patch has gone from just a few hundred followers to tens of thousands of followers.

And it's all thanks to you. Without your continued support and willingness to help spread the word about Bolingbrook Patch, we wouldn't be where we are today.

So as we celebrate our first year, let me be the first to extend the most sincere thank you to each and every one of Bolingbrook Patch's readers.

Thank you!

3. Today is National Chocolate Milkshake Day!

Who doesn't love a chocolate milkshake? And for those of you that may feel guilty indulging in such a treat, hear this: today is National Chocolate Milkshake Day

Here's a great chocolate milkshake recipe, courtesy of Kitchen Daily

Ingredients

  • 1 cup
  • chocolate ice cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoon chocolate
  • syrup
  • Directions

Put the ice cream, milk and chocolate syrup in a blender.

Blend until the mixture is smooth. Pour into a chilled glass and serve immediately.

Ingredient Note: For a thicker shake, add more ice cream. For a thinner shake, add more milk.

    4.

The U-14 Boys Red team from the Bolingbrook Soccer Club take 1st place at the Buffalo Grove Kick-off Classic soccer tournament the weekend of August 27-28th.  The U-14 boys outscored their opponents 11-2 in the 4 games played over the weekend.  Congratulations to the entire team.

    5. Bears Win! Now Blog About It!

The Chicago Bears just had a big win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Now's your chance to blog about it!

Bolingbrook Patch is looking for Bears bloggers.

Anyone may apply. Die-hard fans or casual fans alike can all lend their voice—here’s a chance to share your expertise and opinion.

So if you're a Bears fan—or know of a Bears fan—and think you might enjoy writing about the team in your free time, we'd love to have you as a blogger.
