Five Things to Know Today: Sept. 7

Looking for things to do? Stuff to know? People to meet? We've got it all in our "Five Things" feature.

1. Construction on Weber Road Bridge Likely to Cause Traffic Delays

We featured this story on Tuesday, but it's worth noting to those that missed it that construction crews began work on the Weber Road bridge that crosses over the DuPage River.

Crews will work on the bridge, located about a half of a mile north of the Weber and Boughton Road intersection, a half at a time. That means Weber Road will be reduced to one-lane traffic each way for several months.

According to a village release, state inspections in 2009 revealed the deck beams on the bridge needed to be replaced.

Delays, officials say, are to be expected in both directions.

2. Ashbury’s Kicks Off Season With 9/11 Benefit

will kick off the 2011 Bears season with a special Sept. 21 remembrance honoring those who gave. Special commemorative mugs will be on sale (while supplies last) with proceeds going to the 9/11 Police/Fireman Benevolence Fund.

Stay for the Bears game kicking off at noon. A free halftime buffet will be provided, and commemorative mugs are good for discounted refills. For more information call 630-739-2377.

3. Kiwanis of Bolingbrook and Romeoville in the Hunt for $500,000

According to the Kiwanis Club of Bolingbrook & Romeoville Facebook page, the Kiwanis have been nominated for the Chicago Sun-Times Charity Trust award, which could net the non-profit $500,000.

Voting begins Sept. 19 and last through Oct. 9.

From the Sun Shine Project:

Each year, the Chicago Sun-Times Charity Trust awards grants to charities in the Chicago-region that support youth in education, art and civic engagement.

This year, the Trust has set up the Sun Shine Project for the greater Chicago community to "shine a light" on worthy charities and select organizations and projects that deserve a grant. The project has three phased steps - the first "Nominate" phase is happening right now!

Nominate your favorite youth charity before September 19, 2011 - the Trust will award up to a total of $500,000 in grants!
