Hundreds of patrons took advantage of last week’s Food For Fines Drive.
Through the program, held in connection with National Library Week, patrons could bring in canned or non-perishable food items the DuPage Township Food Pantry and have their overdue fines waived.
Library officials said 337 patrons had fines waived and 1,873 items were collected.
Participants were asked to give donations that were equivalent to their fines.
"The response to our Food for Fines program was tremendous with over 300 individuals clearing overdue fines from their library accounts,” said Theresa Hildebrand, circulation manager at Fountaindale. “With their accounts clear, they will be able to fully utilize our many library services and take advantage of all we have to offer.”
Donations this year were up slightly from last year’s initiative.
About 1,500 items were donated during the 2011 Food For Fines Drive, said Chrissy Little, communications manager at Fountaindale.
