Jane Addams Spelling Bee: Winners Crowned as C-H-A-M-P-S

Michael Edwards, Mark Lou and Tosin Owolabi advance to a Feb. 4 competition pitting the best spellers in Valley View School District against each other.

When 7th grader Mark Lou spelled “complacency” correctly in the 9th round Tuesday, he became the Jane Addams Middle School Spelling Bee Champion.

Lou, along with 8th grader Michael Edwards and 6th grader Odumatosin “Tosin” Owolabi, will now compete in the Feb. 4 Valley View School District 365U Spelling Bee against students from the other four VVSD middle schools.

Runners-up included 8th grader Nicole Nunez who missed on “anticipatory” and 7th grader Trevor Mohrmann who missed on “carcinogen.”

Lou spelled duplicity, corduroy and sedentary correctly in the final rounds leading up to his winning word.

Edwards spelled illustrious correctly in an overtime round after Nunez misspelled anticipatory and Nicole Walker went out on perceived.

Owolabi won in the 7th round by properly spelling photogenic but dropped out of the overall bee in round 8 when he misspelled panache.
