Local Teacher's Daughter to Appear on TV's 'Cupcake Wars'

B.J. Ward Elementary School Bilingual Special Education Teacher Diana Sekura and her husband, Joe, will be in front of the television set Saturday evening watching their 27-year-old daughter compete on the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars.”

Diana Sekura Hicks, a member of the Benet Academy Class of 2004, was selected for the show after noticing a call for auditions for Season Nine of Cupcake Wars on Craig’s List.

Now a resident of Las Vegas, Hicks owns Dee’s Cupcakes. She and her hairstylist husband, Rikki, plan to open a combination hair salon and cupcake café.

“She has loved to cook ever since she was little with her EZ Bake oven,” said her mom. “Her chicken and dumplings and lasagna are her signature dishes.”

Mom Diana isn’t sure what daughter Diana’s best cupcake is.

“It’s between the red velvet cupcake and her churro cupcake,” she said. “What’s in a churro cupcake? It has cinnamon caramel filling inside, and when you bite into it you think you are eating a churro. She tops it with a finger-sized homemade churro.”

Saturday night’s show airs at 7 p.m. The theme of the season is Halloween wars which mom Diana says is her family’s favorite holiday.

“We’re so excited for her,” mom Diana said. “No matter the result, it will be a great opportunity for her to get the exposure she needs to kick start her business.”
