The Grass Is Always Greener, Except at Soldier Field

Not again. Soldier Field a mess before the season even starts.

My wife, in her infinite wisdom, e-mailed the , recommending me to write a Bears blog.

So here goes:

After months of hearing about off the field bickering and legal mumbo jumbo during the NFL lockout, we can finally talk about on the field issues.

For the Bears, that literally means "on-the-field", as the condition of the natural grass sod mess at Soldier Field forced the team to cancel its Family Fun Night.

How many years do we need to hear about this problem? The players want field turf. The coaching staff prefers field turf. Get field turf!

As for the Bears' argument that natural grass is safer, I submit this: if New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft and Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay feel that field turf is safe enough for Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, it should be ok for the Bears.

This isn't the old astro turf we remember from the 1970s and 1980s. This stuff works and many studies show it to be safer than grass. Check out this link for details: http://www.fieldturf.com/

Time for the Bears to realize it's 2011 and get a new faster and more manageable playing surface. That way we can truly focus on what's happening on the field and not with the field.
