Treasure Hunting Pirate Style - That's the Scratch!

Pirate treasures and geocaching.

Aaargh and ahoy, my mateys!

This is shaping up to be a great weekend to fly the coop. The all new Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides is opening and it looks like it is going to be another wild adventure with Captain Jack Sparrow.

Now there’s a fine pirate name!

Of course, I am rather biased as I myself have wings. And what bird would not want to have a fabulous character like “Captain Jack Sparrow” named after their species, much less a fantastic hat with loads of great colorful feathers on it? After all, we all know it’s the hat that makes the pirate.

I for one have designed my own pirate hat for the occasion. It is filled with loads and loads of feathers. Of course, I probably should not have used my own feathers… I am currently feeling a bit of a draft (cluckle, cluckle).

I plan on going on my own pirate adventure this weekend! A group of us from the coop will be going out into the wilderness learning to use CPS. Yes CPS, it’s the Chicken Positioning System.

Of course, the younger human companions will be using the usual GPS (or Global Positioning System if you prefer). Many of whom will be learning to use the GPS for the first time. You see a group of local scouts are going to be earning their merit badges for geo-caching.

What is geo-caching you ask? Well, it is a modern day treasure hunt! And feeling in the pirate mood, I am looking forward to hunting for treasure. You see, you use your CPS or GPS as the case maybe, to locate coordinates to the treasure chest, or in this case “caches”. Which, are usually filled with a sign in log, and sometimes they have all sorts of fun little trinkets or small toys. You find the cache, you sign the log, you take an item, or you leave an item, and you place the cache or treasure chest, back where you found it for the next person to locate it. And some of these caches give you coordinates or directions to find the next in the series.

It’s a pirates dream come true, treasures to be found anywhere and everywhere! Perhaps I will even find a new feather for my pirate hat! And who knows, the treasure could even be my ultimate dream come true!

I can see it now, wandering through the woods, being slow roasted by the heat of the sun. And seeing our smaller hatchlings begin to crack under the pressure of the adventure. Fluttering about on a mission, and searching high and low, until at last we locate the treasure. As I approach my beak begins to tingle. Could it be? But, no it’s not possible. I can hear choirs of chickens clucking softly. I begin to get chicken bumps all over. I pull open the lid to the treasure chest and there inside shining like a beacon from heaven. An entire treasure chest filled with deliciously seasoned fried chicken. Oh, it’s a dream come true! Now that is indeed a treasure of ultimate proportions!

But of course, the true fun is in the adventure. And you never know what you may run into on the trails, or off them. And the things you will learn along the way will stay with you for a life time. So, take the time this weekend to get outside and find a treasure of your own. And let your inner pirate discover his ideal treasure!

 And that’s the scratch!
