Facial Toner – essential or unnecessary?

This week I am addressing the subject of facial toner. Many question the function of facial toner and wonder if it is really needed or an “add on to your skin care regiment” for the benefit of the seller. As you read on you will learn it is not necessary for all skin care types, but does have many benefits that you may think twice about before skipping!

Question from Vivian from Naperville: Is toner helpful to my skin or is this just an added step that is not beneficial?

Lori Majors Answers:   

Vivian-A toner is actually a lotion, generally in a clear liquid form that needs to be applied all over the face usually using a cotton pad.  Toners cleanse skin, restore the ph balance of the skin, close pores and can control oil production along with having hydrating and anti-aging properties.  That said, a toner is not a necessary step in a skincare routine. 

While toners with alcohol should be used only by those with very oily skin that have tried everything else to no avail, hydrating toners and mists contain antioxidants, moisturizing and oil-controlling ingredients that will benefit your skin. 

While these products are not must-haves and can be skipped if you are using a well-formulated moisturizer/serum that provide the same benefits, if you don’t mind spending the money for them, they provide that little extra help your skin may need.  Overall, just experiment and see what works best for your skin!
