YOUR CAR'S TRANSMISSION

The transmission is a major part of your vehicle.  It is made up of hundreds of complex components that enable your vehicle to move.  The transmission system includes: transmission fluid, electrical component, universal joints and torque converter.

The transmission is what works with the engine to match the necessary speed and road conditions of the vehicle.  Whether you have an automatic or manual transmission, the transmission uses gears to keep the engine running at an appropriate RPM's.

Part of your transmission system is also the fluid.  The fluid has many responsibilities, it cleans, cools, lubricates, transmits force, transmits pressure, inhibits varnish buildup and continually protects the transmission from wear and tear.

The best preventive maintenance for your transmission is transmission fluid services.  Regular preventive maintenance services help keep the transmission fluid clean and the transmission running smoothly.  Harsh driving conditions can devastate the life of the transmission fluid which can then lead to transmission failure.  A good rule of thumb is to service your transmission every 30,000 miles or two years.  If your manufacturer suggests more frequent intervals or if you are driving under severe service conditions, you will need to service it more often.

The benefits of preventive maintenance is:

  • Smoother shifting
  • Improved performance
  • Reduced component failure
  • Increased vehicle longevity
As a vehicle ages, it is normal for the transmission to undergo wear and tear.  Over time, the fluid becomes thinner and contaminated, less effectively lubricating the transmission.  Old fluid can also cause premature wear on the transmission as well.  Extreme temperatures, towing and stop and go traffic also increases wear on your transmission.  As your transmission wears and fluid begins to break down, your transmission will not operate smoothly.  Some symptoms to look for include:
  • Loss of power upon acceleration
  • Unable to shift into gear
  • Hard or late shifting gears
  • Slipping gears
  • Grinding noise in the transmission
  • Leaking transmission
