We didn't seed any of the 64 restaurants that made up the playing field in Bolingbrook Patch's first Munch Madness, but it didn't take long to identify the odds-on favorite.
was the only restaurant to shut out its first-round opponent, beating 41-0. Portillo's then used that momentum to cruise all the way into the final four, the championship game and ultimately clinch the outright Bolingbrook title against Monday night.
The Chicago-hot dog landmark handily beat the famous wing joint 44-6.
"It's a Bolingbrook institution that has stood the test of time even with all of the great new restaurants that have come on the scene over the years," said , who voted for Portillo's in the championship game Monday.
Portillo's set a tournament-high for votes in single round (44) and outscored its opponents by a vote total of 236-22.
The winner of this year's Munch Madness Bracket Challenge was , correctly picked 53 of 64 total matchups, including tabbing Portillo's as the Bolingbrook champion.
"I knew Portillos would go far in the 'Madness,'" she said. "I remember when their orignal building was Zacatacos and going there as a teenager. A restaurant has a strong following to move twice, upgrading the facility each time. Besides, who doesn't like their cheese fries and their famous Chocolate cake?"
Buerger also correctly predicted three of the final four and six of the elite eight restaurants.
