A Plainfield Public Works employee suffered minor injuries when a drunken driver crashed into a snow plow Friday night, according to village staff.

Director of Public Works Allen Persons said the snow plow driver was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released, following the late-night crash on Feb. 1.

Plainfield Traffic Sgt. Eric Munson said the plow was headed east on 135th Street near Kerr Street at around 11:30 p.m. when the westbound Cadillac crossed the center line and struck it.

The driver of the Cadillac, 35-year-old William Zielinski of the 300 block of Pinto Drive, Bolingbrook, did not appear to be injured, police said, but was taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital to have blood drawn for a blood-alcohol analysis. Zielinski told police he did not remember the accident, according to Munson.

He was later arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.

Persons said the snow plow driver attempted to avoid the crash.

“The Cadillac ran right into the front of the snow plow. The snow plow operator really had no other place to go,” Persons said, adding the operator slowed down and sounded the horn prior to the crash. “You can’t pull over to the side of the road — there’s the potential for rollover.”

Persons said the snow plow, which had to be cut from the vehicle, was destroyed in the wreck and will have to be replaced. He estimated the cost at around $10,000.

The plow was attached to a 2-1/2-ton dump truck, Persons said, which was not damaged.
