Bolingbrook Man Gets 12 Years in Prison For Deadly Crash in 2012

Jay Cox could have gotten two years more.

Jay Cox faced up to 14 years in prison if convicted of driving drunk and killing a man in a crash. His guilty plea saved him two years of time.

Cox, 36, took the 12 year hit Thursday morning. Will County Judge Daniel Rozak pointed to Cox's "substantial record" before handing down the sentence.

Cox's attorney, Michael Renzi, noted that Cox's trouble with the law was more than 10 years ago and that he was never arrested on drug charges or for driving under the influence.

"Not for the grace of God go many of us," Renzi said.

Cox pleaded guilty in February to aggravated driving under the influence.

Cox, a resident of Bolingbrook, was arrested in February 2012 after a crash at the intersection of Rockhurst Road onto Monterey Drive. Efren Garcia, 30, of Bolingbrook was killed in the wreck.

Garcia, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was turning onto Monterey when Cox crashed into him. Cox's Jeep rolled over and came to rest on its roof, police said.

Garcia was pinned in his car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Cox was taken to Bolingbrook Adventist Hospital where he was treated and released.
