Case of Missing IT Network Switches Believed to Be an Inside Job, Police Say

Presence Health working with Bolingbrook Police and Will County State's Attorney's Office to solve mystery of $214,370 worth of equipment missing from orders.

Why is it so important to have all of your IT network switches in place?

Because the switches are used to connect computers, printers and servers within a building or a campus, according to a Cisco.com web post. And a switch serves as a controller, enabling networked devices to talk to each other efficiently.

No wonder the folks at Bolingbrook's Presence Health, 1000 Remington Blvd., Suite 100, were alarmed when they noticed in December a number of IT network switches allegedly missing from orders, which were supposed to have been delivered.

How many went missing?

Thirty-four switches valued at $6,305 each for a total of $214,370, said Bolingbrook Police Lt. Mike Rompa.

He said a representative of Presence Health met with members of the Bolingbrook Police Department on Jan. 8 to share information in an attempt to solve the mystery of the missing IT network switches.

"The company opened an investigation and (was) able to determine this to be an internal theft," Rompa said. "A thorough list of missing IT network switches was compiled."

Rompa said the case is pending investigation in conjunction with the Will County State's Attorney's Office.
