County Police Plan DUI Crackdown Over Labor Day Weekend

Bolingbrook police say no specific enforcement plans have been established within village limits.

It’s the unofficial end of summer—or eat least summer barbecue season. But residents that celebrate this Labor Day weekend should heed this advice: Don’t drink and drive.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office on Monday announced its plans for its Labor Day 2011 “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” DUI crackdown.

Citing data from the Illinois Department of Transportation showing that the midnight to 3 a.m. time frame is the deadliest time to be on Illinois roads, Dep. Chief Ken Kaupas said the department will increase DUI enforcement over the weekend.

“The numbers do not lie,” Kaupas said. “We will be stepping up our late-night enforcement efforts, making sure impaired drivers are off the road and motorists are buckled up."

The sheriff’s office urges residents to designate a sober driver during Labor Day weekend celebrations.

DuPage County law enforcement will run its first-ever "No Refusal" weekend over the Labor Day holiday, officials announced today.

During a "No Refusal" weekend, motorists stopped on suspicion of drunken driving are asked to submit to a breath test. If they refuse, a search warrant will immediately be sought by police and prosecutors to obtain a blood sample from the driver. A licensed phlebotomist will be on hand to draw the arrestee’s blood for DUI testing following the issuance of a search warrant.

Meanwhile, local communities are planning similar preventative measures.

Romeoville police will be increasing enforcement through Monday, Sept. 5, with several officers from the department’s traffic unit assigned solely to patrolling for drunken drivers, according to Assistant Chief Steven Lucchesi.

Plainfield police also plans to step up their efforts.

And in addition to the extra patrols, they will also be over the Labor Day weekend. The Will County Sheriff's Office and the Illinois State Police will be assisting.

Bolingbrook Lieutenant Mike Rompa said while Bolingbrook officers routinely keep an eye out for hazardous and drunk driving, no specific enforcement plans have been established for the holiday weekend.
