"The high school day ends at 2 p.m.," said Larry Randa, director of community relations for Valley View. "Between that time and when buses depart at roughly 2:10 p.m., up to 3,500 students are leaving the building through several different exits."

School security and Bolingbrook police officers approached Hughes, and he fled the area. A report was filed for further investigation, and officers tried to find Hughes throughout Tuesday night without success.

When security and police reviewed video from the incident on Wednesday, they saw Hughes in a school stairwell displaying a handgun.

Police found Hughes at his home at 10:49 a.m. Wednesday and he was taken into custody. After he was charged Wednesday night, Hughes was taken to the Will County Adult Detention Facility.

The incident remains under investigation.
