Lawyer For Cicero Man Charged With Gunning Down Romeoville Teenage Ex-Girlfriend Wants Cops Notes & Tapes

A Cicero man charged with a senseless ambush shooting that claimed the life of his teenage ex-girlfriend and left her mother wounded might find some help for his case in police notes and recordings, according to court papers filed by his lawyer.

George Lenard, the attorney for 23-year-old accused-killer Erick Maya, requested the police notes and recordings during a Monday morning hearing. Prosecutors did not object to Lenard getting the material.

In a motion filed last week, Lenard claimed police "notes may contain evidence favorable to (Maya), may be used for impeachment, and are necessary to the preparation of (his) defense."

In a separate motion, Lenard wrote that telephone and radio communications and tape recordings "are believed to contain evidence favorable for (Maya)," and are also required for his defense.

Maya faces both murder and attempted murder charges, as well as charges of aggravated battery with a firearm and the unlawful use of a weapon, in connection with a Feb. 13 gun attack on 15-year-old  Briana Valle and her mother, Alicia Guerrero, 33.

Briana and Guerrero were sitting in a vehicle outside their Romeoville home when a gunman fired on them. Briana took two bullets to her head and Guerrero was wounded in her neck.

Briana, a freshman at Romeoville High School, clung to life for days before succumbing to her grievous injuries.

Guerrero had petitioned for—and obtained—an emergency protective order against the man dating her teenage daughter.

In her December petition, Guerrero said Maya texted one of Briana's friends and said he planned to "bring 30 guys to my home and break down my door and rape me and my daughter and my son and take all my money, jewelry and electronics from my house, kidnap my daughter and take her somewhere where I won't find her and rape her too."

Guerrero said Maya also called her daughter foul names and "said that he was going to make her bleed."
