NTSB Findings Offer Glimpse at Final Moments Before Bolingbrook Plane Crash: Report

Preliminary NTSB findings paint a picture of a crazy set of events that led up to a fatal crash into a parking lot near the Chase Bank in Bolingbrook.

Takeoff. Touchdown. Takeoff. Touchdown.

A single-engine plane that crashed into a parking lot near Bolingbrook's Chase Bank at 226 S. Weber Road on Sept. 25 took off, touched down several times on the runway and took off again while its final moments were captured by Clow International Airport surveillance cameras, according to details of a National Transportation Safety Board report outlined by the Chicago Tribune.

Dr. Narayan Venguswamy, a Georgetown, Ky., surgeon, and his wife, Nay Venguswamy were onboard at the time. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck. He staggered out of the burning plane, was transported to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital and later transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with severe burns.

He was pronounced dead the next day—at 5:45 a.m. on Sept. 26.

After its final takeoff, the NTSB said the Cirrus SR20 plane made a left turn and surveillance cameras lost sight of it, but witnesses reported seeing the plane turn at a low altitude and, as it continued to descend, it struck a tree and a light pole before crashing into the Chase parking lot.

The NTSB said an on-scene examination by investigators revealed the plane's flight controls were still operable at the time of the crash. Also, an airframe parachute system was found still packed in the plane, but the postion of the parachute's activation handle could not be verified due to fire damage, according to the NTSB.

The NTSB said there was no black box on the plane.
