Police: Illegal Immigrants Face ID Theft Charges

Two brothers found themselves under questioning by Immigrant and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and in hot water with local authorities following a traffic stop in Plainfield, police said.

Ramon Orizaba, 24, of the 20000 block of Aspen Court in Plainfield, and Anselmo Orizaba, 35, of the 1100 block of Quail Drive in Bolingbrook, each face charges of identity theft and possession of fictitious driver's licenses, according to police. Both men, who are in the country illegally, were in possession of phony IDs, according to Will County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.


Hoffmeyer said the pair were nabbed after a third brother — who was not arrested and whom police are not identifying — was stopped by police near his home in the 20000 block of Aspen Court at around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday. While police were writing the man a citation for driving without a license, his wife came out of the house and told police he had no license because he was in the U.S. illegally, Hoffmeyer said.

According to Hoffmeyer, another resident of the home, who identified himself as "Eric Vasquez," also spoke with police. Upon questioning, "Vasquez" admitted to police that his driver's license was fake, and that his name was really Ramon Orizaba. 

Orizaba and the brother who had been driving the car were both taken to the Department of Homeland Security office in Orland Park, where ICE agents determined that both men, along with a third brother, were in the country illegally, Hoffmeyer said. 

According to police, Ramon Orizaba also confessed that he had a friend's information to the DMV and illegally obtained a fictitious license.

Hoffmeyer said the third brother, Anselmo Orizaba, was taken into custody at a mechanic's shop in Plainfield. Like Ramon, Anselmo Orizaba was also in possession of a fake ID, police said.

The unidentified brother was released pending an extradition hearing, Hoffmeyer said. Ramon and Anselmo Orizaba were booked into the Will County jail on ID theft charges.

Anselmo Orizaba was also booked on a warrant for a 2008 aggravated DUI case, Hoffmeyer said.

Both men remained in custody Thursday, according to jail records. Bond information was not immediately available.
