Romeoville Oil Spill Cancels Valley View Buses

Thursday's oil leak near the district's Transportation Center forces officials to cancel bus service. Students who cannot attend class will be given an excused absence.

The Valley View School District will not be offering bus transportation to or from school today because of ongoing cleanup efforts of an oil spil near the district's Transportation Center in Romeoville.

Students who cannot make it to school will receive an excused absence.

Just past noon on Thursday, Romeoville officials were notified of the spill at 719 Parkwood Ave., in the Romeoville Industrial Park. According to a release, village staff determined it was a petroleum-based substance apparently coming from an underground Enbridge—a company that transports Canadian oil—petroleum pipeline.

All businesses along Parkwood Avenue were advised to evacuate as a precautionary measure and the Romeoville Fire Department, Coast Guard, Illinois EPA, Enbridge Energy, Public Utilities, Romeoville Police Department, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Will County Forest Preserve agencies were all called to help in the matter.

The pipeline was shut down at 12:45 p.m. by Enbridge Energy Partners and the spill has since been contained.

Valley View transportation was cancelled because of the its close proximity to the spill.

Both Bolingbrook and Romeoville will provide extra police services around all schools to help with the expected larger than usual traffic flow.
