Trial Date Set For Bolingbrook Man in Attempted Kidnapping Case

Bolingbrook resident George Smith is looking at a June trial.

A Bolingbrook man charged with trying to lure an 11-year-old girl into his truck learned Wednesday that his trial was set to start in June.

George Smith, 66, has been free on bond since May. He was arrested in February 2012 after allegedly trying to entice a young girl into his vehicle.

Smith first was charged with disorderly conduct, but that was boosted to felony attempted child abduction in April.

According to court papers, Smith served four years active duty with the Marines and suffered from post-traumatic stress syndrome. Smith was under the care of a doctor at a Veterans Affairs hospital and was also taking medication for post-traumatic stress syndrome, the April filing said.

Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak scheduled a June 3 trial for Smith. Smith's attorney, David Shiffer, said he will employ an "affirmative defense that there was no intent to do any harm or commit any criminal act."
