Police said Ryburn entered a first-floor apartment and locked out two female visitors, one of which had three children in the apartment. Officers were also informed there was another child inside and Ryburn had been drinking with the group police had attempted to stop, according to reports. The women told police they were concerned for the children.

The officers then saw two men fighting inside, police said. The door was opened by one of the occupants. Officers said they tried to conduct a well-being check in the apartment and were immediately attacked by Cardenas. Ryburn then grabbed one officer from behind and pushed him into a chair, police said. They then fell through a glass table, shattering it. Both Cardenas and Ryburn resisted arrest by physically fighting with officers, police said.
