UPDATED: Teen Charged with Reckless Homicide in Fatal Accident

Josefina Prospero, 46, died after being trapped under the SUV that ran into her apartment early Saturday morning. The teenage driver was charged Saturday afternoon.

A 17-year-old was charged Saturday afternoon with reckless homicide in connection with a fatal crash that killed a Bolingbrook woman as she slept.

The Will County State's Attorney's Office charged Luis Benito of Bolingbrook with reckless homicide, according to Lt. Michael Rompa. Police said they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Josefina Prospero, 46, of 315 Woodcreek Drive in Bolingbrook, was sleeping at 2:56 a.m. when police say Benito crashed a Chevrolet SUV into the building. The vehicle trapped Prospero and she was pronounced dead at 4 a.m., according to the Will County Coroner's Office.

Benito drove southbound through a common area at the apartment complex before crashing into the lower-level apartment, according to police.

Paths leading to the building are wide enough for vehicles, but cars are clearly prohibited from driving on them.

There were visible signs Saturday that a vehicle had driven through the grass and tire marks could be seen on the blacktop. Orange spray paint marked where the vehicle had continued from the pavement onto the grass and ultimately into the building.

A neighbor passing by the scene Saturday afternoon said he didn't know what happened and hadn't heard anything, as he had been working overnight. Due to a language barrier, a next-door neighbor was unable to comment.

The Riverstone Apartments are located not far from the busy Route 53 corridor near Interstate 55.

After the accident, a passenger in the vehicle fled the scene on foot and was later located and detained by officers who were responding, according to police. The passenger was not charged.

The driver fought with police, and was taken into custody, officers said.

Benito was expected to appear in court Monday, according to Charles Pelkie, director of public affairs for the Will County State's Attorney's Office.

Benito, his passenger and Prospero's husband were taken to where they were treated and released, according to police.

An autopsy was conducted and preliminary results indicate that Prospero died due to multiple injuries from the vehicle striking the apartment, according to the Will County Coroner's Office. Prospero's cause of death will be determined later, pending completion of the police investigation and toxicology results.
