Woman Seriously Injured After Being Struck by Garbage Truck on I-55

A 65-year-old woman was struck around 2:41 p.m. Wednesday near Lemont Road in Darien, causing significant traffic delays on southbound I-55, police said.

A 65-year-old woman was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a garbage truck while standing outside her vehicle on Interstate 55 near Darien.

Police said the woman got out of her car after pulling over on the shoulder of southbound I-55, just north of Lemont Road, around 2:41 p.m., and was partially in the right lane of traffic when she was struck by a garbage truck.

The woman was transported to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where she is listed in critical condition, according to an officer with the Illinois State Police District 2.

The incident caused significant traffic delays on southbound I-55 during the evening commute as officers conducted crash reconstruction. All lanes were opened around 5:30 p.m.
