Two Candidates for 6th Ward Alderman Kicked Off Ballot

Following the challenge of several candidate submission forms by another candidate, 6th Ward Alderman Peter Muscarella and challenger Greg Simos were removed from the April 9 ballot Jan. 7, by the Oak Forest Electoral Board.

Signatures sheets without page numbers and invalid signatures got two candidates for 6th Ward alderman kicked off the ballot Jan. 7.

Alderman Peter Muscarella and challenger Greg Simos were removed from the April 9 ballot Jan. 7, following a special meeting of the Oak Forest Electoral Board.

Sixth Ward candidate James Hortsman filed challenges to both candidates' paperwork, noting the missing numbers and alleged invalid signatures, in addition to Simos' failure to submit an economic statement to the county—a legal requirement for candidacy.

“Based upon those findings that were presented, the electoral boardunfortunately had to take Mr. Muscarella and Mr. Simos off the ballot,” said City Clerk Scott Burkhardt.

The removal of Muscarella and Simos from the ballot leaves the 6th Ward with only two candidates on the ballot: Hortsman and Ken Barry.

I really can't see jim hortman being a alderman when he can't handle being a member of a committee,he just doesn't have the time or patients for it..

It just bothers me that on a technicality that a great alderman Peter Muscarella can be taken off the ballot. If Hortmans wasn't such a coward to face both Simos and Muscarella on the ballot I would have more respect for him. Hortsman lost to Muscarella 4 years ago by a land slide, and I'm sure knows can't beat him again. Both Simos and Muscarella proved the signatures were valid but were still taken off because their signature sheets were not numbered! How does that law help our community??? It is suppose to be used for documents with hundreds of pages not signature sheets. To me Hortsman knows he can't beat Muscarella and Simos and this is his cowardly way of attempting to get in. Hopefully Ken Barry can win this election because putting someone like Hortsman into office isn't what's best for our community.

It's unfortunate that Peter Muscarella was taken off this ballot due to a trivial technicality. I had some roof work done and forgot to get a permit and the contractors were ordered to stop. I contacted Peter and that same day, I got my permit and my contractors were able to continue their work. How often do you receive this type of great customer service nowadays? It's rare and it's too bad Peter won't have the opportunity to serve Oak Forest the next 4 years. Politics is politics, but shame on Hortsman!

I considered Pete to be an excellant Alderman and find it tragic that a candidate would find it necessary to have him removed over a minor technicality. Good luck in your future endeavors. 6th ward voters should remember that due to one candidate fililg objections(not Berry)they have less choice in the upcoming election. Thank you to Pete and Greg for your longtime service to the City of Oak Forest.

There is nothing wrong with someone doing the right thing and following the rules. Maybe if the OF government did this, they'd be more concerned with making OF a better place rather than spending money the city doesn't have. We don't need any more yes men on the City Council... We need someone who will stand up and push back. But if you're ok with continuing to fund the unnecessary spending, by all means, you may pay my taxes too.
