Bolingbrook Kicks Off Holiday Season with Symphony in Lights

The Village of Bolingbrook held its annual holiday tree-lighting ceremony on Saturday at the Promenade.

They came out in droves despite the bitter wind and cold, and all were ready for the holiday season to begin.

The Village of Bolingbrook held its tree-lighting ceremony and Symphony in Lights at the Promenade on Saturday. The annual event drew holiday-hungry crowds from the village and surrounding suburbs, all ready to visit Santa, view ice sculpture demonstrations, watch a live nativity and bask in the sights and sounds of the season.

The Bolingbrook Community Chorus performed Christmas carols just prior to the lighting ceremony.

"I am so ready; I can't wait," Chorus President Jackie Wychocki said. "I've been listening to Christmas music since September. I can't wait!"

Vinicio McPhee, 7, and his brother Ladainien, 3, of Bolingbrook, came out to ask Santa for a "Stampede" Nerf gun. They stayed for hot chocolate, cookies and the ceremony, their grandmother said, while all three warmed up in one of the shopping center's rest areas.

Stephanie Piper, of Lockport, checked out Santa's tent with her son, Drew, 5, and his cousin Addy.

"We just missed him but we heard he's gonna be at Bass Pro Shop all winter long, and we're excited about that!" Piper said.

The festival also featured carriage rides, a Gingerbread House Contest, holiday-themed comedic stylings, storytelling and face painting.

Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar took the stage to officially usher in the season and call for the ceremonial flipping of the light switch, while the crowd chanted, "Light the tree!" behind the stage.

"This is the first time we've come to see them light the tree," said Jessica Johnske, who brought her three daughters — Emily, 7, Katie, 5, and Mia, 2.

"It's my favorite holiday, and I will start shopping soon," the Bolingbrook mom said.
