Gun Control: Where Does Your Congressman Stand?

Patch contacted 10 newly elected representatives to find out what they plan to do to help curb gun violence in our country in the wake of last week's mass killing in Newtown, CT. Those who actually wanted to discuss the issue say it's time for

When members of the 113th Congress take their seats in January, one of the top items on their agenda very well could be a new look at federal gun control laws.

In the wake of the Newtown, CT, tragedy of one week ago today, President Obama on Wednesday set a January deadline for his administration to "create concrete proposals" to curb gun violence in the United States.

Obama also called on Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 to "pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity ammunition clips" and to "close a gun show loophole that allows people to purchase firearms from private dealers without a background check."

What will come of this renewed debate is yet to be seen, but what is certain is that congressional compromise will be essential to get anything done.

With that in mind, Patch this week reached out to all 10 of our newly elected congressman in the city and south and western suburbs and asked where they stand heading into this debate.

We thought this might be an opportunity for them to be clear to their constituents about how they plan to help solve the worsening problem of gun violence in our country.

What we found, however, is that only four wanted to answer our questions. The other six never returned our calls for comment.

Here's some of what the four who did contact us had to say:

Rep. Mike Quigley, 5th District

Congressman Quigley called on his colleagues Tuesday to take action and stand up to the gun lobby in the wake of the tragedy in Newtown.

Quigley said he has a long history of pushing for commonsense gun control reforms and has specifically called for closing the gun show loophole, banning high-capacity clips and examining the role of mental health in gun violence.  He has introduced the Border Security Enhancement Act and the Trafficking Reduction and Criminal Enforcement (TRACE) Act, both of which would provide the ATF with the resources it needs to effectively combat illegal gun flow in America.  Quigley also spearheaded the effort to file a “friend of the court” amicus brief, urging the Supreme Court to allow Chicago’s handgun ban to stand

Rep. Tammy Duckworth, 8th District

The following is a statement released from the office of Rep.-elect Tammy Duckworth:

The tragedy in Connecticut last week further illustrates the need for reasonable bans on assault weapons and high capacity magazines. I come from a family that owns firearms and I fully respect the rights that the second amendment guarantees. It is time for reasonable, responsible gun ownership. It is time for members of both parties to come together and show the courage to enact policies that will protect our children.

Rep. Danny Davis, 7th District

In a short statement, Danny Davis told Patch he supports both a ban on assault weapons and on high capacity magazines or clips.

Rep. Bobby Rush, 1st District

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced a new task force on preventing gun violence Wednesday. Pelosi said the task force would work towards "restoring the assault weapons ban, strengthening the background check system and addressing mental health and violence issues, according to CNN

Rep. Bobby Rush was one of the speakers at the press conference. He "urged immediate action, saying "we cannot allow the kindergartens of America to become killing fields," CNN reported.

Rush's son, Huey, was shot and killed in Chicago at the age of 29.

NBC reported Rush was in Washington Tuesday to "re-introduce Blair's Bill, legislation he introduced after Blair Holt was killed on a bus in Chicago, that establishes a system to keep unlicensed guns out of people's hands."

The following are the Congressmen who did not return calls from Patch for comment.

Rep. Dan Lipinski, 3rd District

Discovering Dan Lipinski's stance on gun control issues is a difficult process. He never returned Patch's calls for comment and an internet search yields few clues. Lipinski did offer his condolences to the families of the victims in Newtown on his Facebook page, but that's as far as he appears to have gone.

His Facebook followers, glad to see his condolences, were also demanding action. One constituent posted back to Lipinski:

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, but when are we going to stand up to the NRA and have meaningful gun control in this country? How many more slaughters do we have to have?

He also received no response from the congressman.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez, 4th District

Even though he did not return our calls for comment, last week, Gutierrez tweeted, "No words can describe this tragedy or the pain our nation feels. Let's resolve to keep kids safe from gun violence. #Connecticut #Chicago

Gutierrez voted in favor of a ban on certain semiautomatic assault weapons in 1994.

Rep. Peter Roskam, 6th District

In the 2012 Rep. Peter Roskam received a 92 percent rating from the National Rifle Association and received $3,000 in campaign cash from the powerful lobbying group. It's little wonder why he didn't return our calls seeking comment on how he plans to work toward gun control in the new Congress.

Roskam's office wouldn't give him a straight answer either. This is a portion of the letter written by Ken Trantowski of Glen Ellyn.

On Monday morning I contacted the office of the Congressman Peter Roskam who represents the Sixth District of Illinois to learn his position regarding assault weapons ...

... You would think Congressman Roskam would be prepared to deal with such an inquiry after this tragedy. At least, I thought he would be able to respond, but that was NOT the case. In reply to my question, Jeff Ragsdale, a congressional assistant told me "You know, Congressman Roskam is pro-gun rights." He asked me to hold while he checked on the official position regarding assault weapons. After a brief wait he told me that he would send me an email later in the day.

I asked the congressional assistant if he knew whether Congressman Roskam would be willing to accept further donations from the NRA based on the terrible Newtown tragedy. He told me to call the Roskam re-election office and provided the telephone number. I called office and was directed to leave a message. Later in the day I received a call from David Rivera from the Roskam re-election office, and I posed my questions regarding future donations. Mr. Rivera asked me why I was calling this office, and I told him I was directed by the congressional assistant. He took my email address and said he would reply. As of this writing he has not replied. Later Congressional Assistant Jeff Ragsdale called me to report that he would NOT send me an email regarding my information request; but I would receive a letter at some unspecified date

Rep. Bill Foster, 11th District

Democrat Bill Foster is returning to Congress after a two-year absence and some serious redistricting. Getting a grip on where Foster stands on gun control is also a bit of a challenge.

An internet search turns up virtually nothing on the subject, or even a statement regarding last Friday's tragedy. One constituent turned to Foster's Facebook page for some answers, writing the congressman-elect a letter with some very direct questions including:

(a) Your views on loss of innocent lives due to gun violence.
(b) What actions have you taken in past towards this issue.
(c) Would you be willing to support repeal of or modifications to the second amendment and setup a government fund to buy back all automatic assault weapons? If not, why?
(d) What other legislative changes, aimed at reducing gun violence, would you propose in the next quarter?

This questioner is still awaiting a response from Foster, as is Patch.

Rep. Randy Hultgren, 14th District

Like Roskam, Rep. Randy Hultgren has earned high marks from the NRA with a 92 percent rating and a $2,000 campaign donation in 2012. Also like Roskam his silence on the issue of gun control since Newtown has been deafening.

Hultgren's office did not return our calls for comment. His office also hasn't been returning messages left my constituents on the Congressman's Facebook page. Several have asked where he stands or for even a simple statement, but none has been provided.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, 16th District

Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger has been a strong advocate for the Second Amendment. On his campaign website, Kinzinger writes "As a member of the National Rifle Association and the Illinois State Rifle Association, I will be a strong supporter of the Second Amendment." He also received a $2,000 donation from the NRA in 2012.

If he's moderated his viewpoint in the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings, it's impossible to tell. Kinzinger did not return Patch's call for comment. He has at least acknowledged the tragedy on his Facebook, pointing constituents to where they can direct condolences. Questions on gun control, however, from fans of his page, have gone ignored.

If we should hear back from any of the newly elected congressmen, we'll be sure to update this article.

Fully auromatic weapons have been banned for years yet they are on the streets in every state. What we need are stiffer penalties when arrested for having one. Right now it's a slap on the hand and a small penalty. If caught with a fully automatic weapon prison time should be the norm, most of those in possession of one will end up there anyway.

I would like the Patch, and every media outlet out there, to publish a listing of all citizens home addresses that are anti-gun. If you are ant-gun please place a large sign in your front yard claiming so. Please notify all of your beliefs and that your home / property is a "gun free" zone!!! Let's see how that works out for you and your family!! IF you are an anti-gunner and unwilling to do this, WHY???

We should ban gun-free zones.

Are you a US citizen?
SonofJohn December 25, 2012 at 05:37 am
For many years, the media had portrayed all gun owners as mentally unstable or worse, criminals. Now the press had a real kook with which to beat up law-abiding gun owners. Day after day, week after week, the media gave up all pretense of objectivity and demanded a total ban on all handguns. The Dunblane Inquiry, a few months later, sealed the fate of the few sidearms still owned by private citizens.
During the years in which the British government incrementally took away most gun rights, the notion that a citizen had the right to armed self-defense came to be seen as vigilantism. Authorities refused to grant gun licenses to people who were threatened, claiming that self-defense was no longer considered a reason to own a gun. Citizens who shot burglars or robbers or rapists were charged while the real criminals were released.

It can be reworded or repealed as easily as any other part of the constitution. And that is NOT easy. Despiser isn't even close.
Congress alone cannot change the constitution. It always involves ratification by 3/4 of the states through the state legislatures or state conventions. That is a nearly impossible task. If the amendment is proposed by Congress it also requires passage by 2/3 of the house and 2/3 of the senate. Only one amendment has ever been repealed. The 18th amendment (Prohibition) was repealed by the 21st. The equal right amendment "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex", forty years later still has not been ratified by enough states to become part of the constitution. In Illinois a 3/5 supermajority of the legislature is require to ratify. Illinois has never achieved a supermajority to ratify the ERA. Amending the constitution is NOT easy and requires much more support than the anti-gun forces have ever achieved.

Hey, should revolvers be banned??? See video: 6 shots, a reload, and six shots on target in 2.99 seconds!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJ5Pts9dUdA How about old West style rifles?? Anyone remember "The Rifleman"??? http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=rifleman+intro&mid=A642E4A5C111B8924C72A642E4A5C111B8924C72&view=detail&FORM=VIRE1 Now Anti-gunners, are THESE "assault weapons"?? Why / Why Not??
Nancy December 28, 2012 at 03:50 am
Don't know if anyone has followed the story about the sniper that opened up on the volunteer firemen in New York. I believe he killed two firemen and injured two. Not sure exactly. The problem is not that he had a firearm, the problem is he was in prison for killing his grandmother, and they LET HIM OUT. When they pass a law that says the fork made me FAT, maybe I'll have a different opinion on gun control.
SonofJohn December 28, 2012 at 04:20 am
Or Nancy, the car killed the other people, the knife just jumped up and stabbed the person to death by itself. Those nasty Guns are to blame. How stupid have people become, or were they always this dumb? As I have said over and over; We have a revolving system of liberals releasing criminals back into society, they are to blame for the deaths of those firefighters.
Nancy December 28, 2012 at 04:46 am
Oh I know. Liberals are all about rights and losing them at the same time; most confusing group. This is how I see it. If the first responder, in Newton, which in this case just happened to be the principle, had a gun, this tragedy may not have happened. Trained properly in first response he/she could have taken this guy out. They ended up calling 911. Why? Because the POLICE have the guns! But, by the time the police got there it was too late. Guns are not the problem, just like the spoon didn't make me fat or the car I drove after the 10th beer didn't cause the accident.
MikeK December 28, 2012 at 05:46 am
Christine,
You make too much sense for those just willing to give up their rights at a moments notice.. While Maori Tuakana thinks the Constitution is outdated and we should revise it with sub sections..REALLY! If that is the case, I guess we should begin to put subsections in the rest of the the rights. Let's start with Freedom of Speech? Or Religion? or (I bet the Patch will love this one) Freedom of Press? What subsections should we do here? There are very good reasons the Bill of Rights did not have subsections and that was to keep it simple. It's your rights and others rights, just because you chose not to use certain rights does not give you the right to begin to eliminate any rights for the rest.
MikeK December 28, 2012 at 05:59 am
Those of you willing to get duped from those seeking political expediency to restrict weapons from law abiding citizens, seem to fall for any tragic headline seeking to right a wrong.
The issue in this country is not a 2nd Amendment issue or an assault weapon (that was not used but people still make this claim for the Sandy Hook tragedy). It is a mental health issue. This young man was troubled and his mother had available means to get her son mental help. She didn't and this somehow relates to the 2nd Amendment how? It doesn't. It allows treasonous liberals and RINOs, in congress, to push an issue using this tragedy and using the emotions of fool hardy individuals. Those same foolish individuals have not an understanding of how rights came about and from those who have sacrificed their lives defending the Constitution and Our Country.

It is about education not restriction...
Logansdad December 28, 2012 at 04:15 pm
Is that what the Newtown School shooter's mom did with her son? I guess she educated him on the important lesson of gun safety.
John Roberts December 28, 2012 at 04:28 pm
No she left him alone with guns by himself at any time, full access to play like they are toys, and him being down stairs all the time, and her having to tell people to watch him at all times tells me she was uneducated as a parent, and uneducated about how to handle the gun situation...it also tells me that these mom and son never really talked to each other...down stairs all the time with guns..your not with your parents watching movies, talking, playing games, hanging out, going to the movies, providing a safe environment..she also sounded like someone that talked about their kids in front of them..it's the parent who tells her friend in front of their kids " I don't know why he writes on the walls and climbs on the counter I just can't handle him" know what the kid does? Gets a marker writes on the walls then climbs on the counter and turns and smiles at the mom and friend..."Playing the Roll" and if you have to tell someone to watch out for your kid at all times...what the hell kind of parenting are you doing?..again education not restriction...
John Roberts December 28, 2012 at 04:39 pm
It is funny we teach our kids "Don't mess with guns, don't be violent,no violent video games,no violent movies,no violence at all" then in the same breath, same house, same family...praise our children for joining the military where they "Mess with guns, shoot people, blow people up,commit suicide at an alarming rate, become more violent than the average citizen, and cause more destruction than natural disasters....we wonder why kids are so confused...educate your kids about weapons, violence, survival and stop trying to shelter them..what did alcohol prohibition do?war on drugs?..caused more violence than the drinker or user it's self is what it did..People make guns and people will continue to make guns...and if you restrict people will make deadlier guns..right now gunmakers follow a guide line and most are registered gunmakers...make people not follow the rules and they won't....you have no idea about the guns that your average citizen makes that can not be put on the Internet by your average citizen because government will raid them or they are not allowed to have...to ignore the fact where guns come from is crazy..teen angers know how to make bullets from tradition being passed down from generations and have never shot anyone....
John Roberts December 28, 2012 at 04:48 pm
Like I said..take a look at the incident here in Joliet....Man shoots girlfriend then himself...Right....now let me explain the reality of that..the other side of thinking....A man who can shoot his spouse 3 times then himself is the same man that would of stabbed this girl 100 times...think she would of survived?..Her chances of survival were greater because he had a gun..had he had a knife she would surly be dead and he more than likely would still be alive..think he would of slit his wrists? I think not...he would of stabbed her to death,or beat her to death with something..and still would be alive....it is a double edge sword it is personal preference...and again education not restriction....There are people dying everyday being hit by a car and left ...hit and runs happen every single day...there are more people being ran over than being shot...wanna restrict cars too?..maybe back to horse and buggy..but when a horse stomps a child then we can restrict them too...See how the restriction thing works...Statistics say more spouses die from blunt force trauma and stabbing than being shot...maybe ban hammers and knives..soon we will just sit and wait to be told what to do daily by an "elected official"like good little slave...all wear suits, same color, and wait for daily orders..lmao...because you know..."To be a safer community"...

Gun advocates want the ability to defend themselves from the unstable loons. If more of us were armed we would have better results, like this one: http://beforeitsnews.com/alternative/2012/12/media-quiet-about-san-antonio-theater-shooting-2524596.html
Rachael B. December 30, 2012 at 03:43 am
Scott, if more of us were armed, there would be more murders. Simple truth.
SonofJohn December 30, 2012 at 05:27 am
Chicago with the toughest gun restrictions in Illinois, and now over 500 murderes. 90 % with firearms. Its the culture of gang crime in our cities NOT the Firearms.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDglpt8hpyg Time to take a stand for all 2nd amendment citizens and constitutionalists.
Scott Harmon December 30, 2012 at 07:02 pm
Rachael B., did you ignore the link that I posted? If there was no armed good citizen in the the theater there would have been more innocent movie goers murdered. Your Simple truth doesn't hold water. Now, if you are a bad guy, I would agree with your statement. But the bad guys wouldn't be effected by any gun regulation. Chicago is proof of that. Good guys with guns stop the bad guys with guns. That is real truth.
Scott Harmon December 31, 2012 at 04:47 pm

The argument seems to be about firepower/Semi automatic firearms and connecting them to assualt weapons for scare tactics and possible confiscation. The example is the school shooting. However, it is said that a cap and ball musket, which is a single shot ram rod loaded weapon can be fired and reloaded and fired again in three seconds. I'm gonna give it ten seconds per fire and reload and fire again. That means that the creep who was not under any attack himself could have killed just as many kids in three and a half minutes! He had no opposition! The firepower argument is useless. The school should have CCW people, someone with a taser and or other devices and a training program to defend their ground. Being prepared these days is everything! Mentally ill, drugs are far and wide the first place we need to look to solve some of these problems...not guns and law abiding folks.
Edward Andrysiak January 1, 2013 at 10:12 pm
Son of...don't you think if Marty Z wanted everybody to know where he shoots, works and how many and what kinds of guns he has...HE would have told us!
Are you "the gentleman in the wood pile here" if so, why?
SonofJohn January 2, 2013 at 04:55 am
Gun control is about ignorance on the part of those that would limit a Constitutional right. Death will always be a part of life. How do we as Americans prevent untimely death? I suggest it is not possible in a free society. Thousands die from cars, do we ban cars? thousands die from drowning do we ban water? or the ability to swim in water?, hundreds die falling off ladders , do we ban ladders? The left only cries for those that meet their narrow mindedness.
Edward Andrysiak January 5, 2013 at 03:22 pm
For all you anti gun people...we can charter a bus and drop you and your wife and kids off on the south side of Chicago for a four block walk through "the neighborhood"...a gun in a sealed envelope. If you open it before you get back to the bus which we will park four blocks down...you have to promise to change your position on CCW and guns in general. Any takers?

I can't imagine what a customer could do that would cause a cashier to yell at them. Can you expandRead More a little on the situation? I shop there often but generally use the self-scan. There is one cashier that works that area that can be quite rude. It took me a minute to get my ID out and she went off on me. Sorry I wasn't as prepared as I should be but it isn't often that a 45+ woman is asked for ID.
