Report: Bolingbrook Man Found Innocent of Suffocating Son

Randel Thomas, of Bolingbrook, was found not guilty of murdering his young child.

The Bolingbrook man charged with suffocating his 5-month-old son in September 2009 was found innocent Tuesday, according to a Chicago Sun-Times report.

Randel Thomas, 21, was originally charged with murder after prosecutors said he suffocated his son, Christopher Thomas, after he wouldn't go to sleep.

According to the report, Randel Thomas acknowledged in a videotaped police interview played for jurors last week that he rested his hand on the boy's head while they were on the bed together. He said the boy couldn’t lift his head, and that must have been how his son died. Thomas said it was an accident.

Prosecutors said Randel Thomas only acknowledged touching Christopher’s head after police asked repeatedly what happened, the report said. Assistant State’s Attorney Anna Rossi pointed to injuries found on Christopher’s face.
