Township to Offer Civil Union, Marriage Ceremonies on Fridays

Officiant Marti Barton, of Joyful Promises, will perform weddings and civil unions each Friday in the township's board room, a release from Joyful Promises said.

Ceremonies will be by appointment only and be held from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at half hour intervals for a fee of $40. Ceremony arrangements will be made directly with Joyful Promises.

The half-hour time frame also allows time for photos and to celebrate the moment, Barton said.

"For those seeking a short, simple ceremony but don't want a cold impersonal courthouse wedding or the hassle of driving to Joliet, this is a perfect alternative," Barton said.

On Jan. 31, Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law the Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act, which recognizes same-sex unions. With the new legislation, Illinois became the sixth state to allow civil unions.

"Through Joyful Promises, our residents or anyone seeking to marry or be joined in civil union in Will County can enjoy the convenience of having this service right here at the township office," he said.
