"No showers, no mirrors, no machines. Just results." That's the motto that has earned CrossFit Plainfield a loyal following just a year after opening.

  • With more than 1,200 votes cast, readers in Plainfield, Bolingbrook and Romeoville crowned CrossFit Plainfield as the best gym in the 'burbs as part of Patch's "Best Of" readers' choice series.

Since opening in January 2013, the business, 14903 Center St., has brought the constantly varied, high-intensity CrossFit program to Plainfield.

"Our trained coaches can modify or scale any movement, and we can work with any level of fitness or ability," a spokeswoman from CrossFit Plainfield told Patch in October. "Our program is best known for its results, and the amazing positive atmosphere we cultivate."

In an interview with Patch shortly after opening, owner Scott Romijn said variety was one of the keys to CrossFit's success.

"At our facility, we like to say routine is the enemy — you just never know what you're going to get until you walk in the door, and that's what keeps people coming back for more," he said.

Romijn said CrossFit can be modified for anyone and any fitness level, from the superfit to elderly clients to kids.

"Everyone can do the same workout, sometimes we just have to modify. If someone is injured, we will change the workout to meet their needs — also known as a MOD WOD," he told Patch. "There is no one that cannot benefit from CrossFit, whether it be for weight loss, strength training, self healing, improving time and performance in athletic sports/events, or even job performance (police, fire, military)."

CrossFit fans had plenty to say about the local business, singing its praises as "Best Of" voting began last week:

Colleen ... I went from a size 20 to an 8 in six months! I also have a disability, which the coaches all know exactly how to scale and modify for so that I can get a great workout no matter what I 'can't' do. And the atmosphere is absolutely amazing. This place has seriously changed my life. In so many ways.

Lynsey Ingram I just started working out at crossfit Plainfield a month or two ago. best place by far. so much motivation and inspiration.

Debbie. F. Wonderful coaches that truly care about YOU and your goals. Fellow members are very friendly and always there to cheer you on. Hate working out? I'm confident this place will make you want to come back for more.

Tiffany Berry I started at Crossfit Plainfield almost a year ago. I am as excited to go in each day now, as when I first started. I had no idea how strong I was or how fit I could be. Beyond incredible coaching, I also got a second family who's failures and successes I get to participate in, and this goes both ways. I've never been "cheered on" at any of the health clubs I've gone to, never watched a person attempt something for the first time and been so into it, that it was almost as if I were experiencing it myself, never wanted to push myself like I do here. Joining Crossfit Plainfield is one of the best things I've ever done for me. (the brand new body I inhabit is kind of cool too!)

In an email to Patch, Romijn reacted to the "Best Of" win.

"We are honored to have earned the award for best gym in Plainfield," he said. "Our box (CrossFit's word for gym) will be celebrating our one-year anniversary on January 11th and we could not think of a better present! We hope to welcome more members in 2014."
