All-Day Kindergarten Spikes Student Growth

Those who participated in Valley View’s inaugural all-day kindergarten showed higher growth in reading and math than their half-day counterparts, according to data recently released by the district.

The district released the average RIT gain of students in both the half-day and full-day programs.

RIT is a “consistent, equal interval scale used to measure student instructional growth over time,” according to Valley View.

Students in the half-day kindergarten program had an average RIT gain of 11.3, versus 18.6 for students in the all-day kindergarten program.

For math, students in the half-day kindergarten had an average RIT gain of 12.6, versus 19.9 for all-day kindergarten students.

The difference between the 2012 and 2013 programs was significantly higher for all ethnicities, but the highest for African American students. These students had an average RIT gain of 11.8 in 2012. That jumped to 19.6 in 2013.

Asian students jumped 7 points, Caucasian students jumped 7.1 points, Hispanic students jumped 7.3 points and multiracial students jumped 4.7 points.
