Bolingbrook HS Students Work with Ward After-School Enrichment Program

B.J. Ward Elementary School started the program in March to help students improve their test scores.

Officials will soon begin the process of evaluating B.J. Ward Elementary School’s After-School Enrichment Program with an eye on continuing the successful partnership with Bolingbrook High School students next school year.

Launched on March 12, B.J. Ward started the program to help students who were on the verge of making a break-through in college and career readiness. The goal was to increase student vocabulary, improve reading comprehension and ultimately improve their MAP scores.

Several BHS students took turns coming to Ward after school, providing an important link for elementary school students to increase their skills by working with someone older than them.

BHS senior Olivia Webster, a member of the National Honor Society who is headed for Journalism School at the University of Missouri-Columbia, says she volunteers her time because she likes helping little kids and she has smaller siblings too.

Fellow senior Emily Coronado, another NHS member who will attend  Franciscan College, says she loves kids and would like to be a teacher.

Ward Principal Ted Warpinski, Assistant Principal Susan Padilla and Literacy Leader Amy Paris oversee the program.
