Bolingbrook Teacher Brings Immigration to Life in Ellis Island Simulation

U.S. history instructor Ken Kulawiak is working with students at Bolingbrook High School to help them understand what immigrants coming to America faced in the 1890s.

In the here and now, immigration reform legislation is a hot topic.

Back in the 1890s, the world was a difference place. And Bolingbrook High School's Ken Kulawiak, a U.S. history teacher, has been working with his students to help them understand the challenges faced by immigrants when they first landed at Ellis Island, according to a Valley View School District news release.

Many them underwent literacy testing before passing into America. That was then. Now, President Obama is renewing his call for the passage of stalled immigration reform measures.
