Bolingbrook Teacher Wins 'Shout Out' Award

Sue Brown, a teacher at Jonas E. Salk Elementary School in Bolingbrook, Illinois, was named a recipient of the 2014 “Teacher Shout Out” Award for being a top vote-getter in the Herff Jones “Teacher Shout Out” contest. Votes were submitted during the six-week voting period on the Teacher Shout Out online community at www.TeacherShoutOut.com.

As one of ten Teacher Shout Out Award recipients, Brown will receive a cash reward to split with Jonas E. Salk Elementary. The announcement comes in conjunction with Teacher Appreciation Week, giving Brown and the other Award Recipients another reason to celebrate the impact they’ve had on their students and schools.

“These individuals symbolize the vital role that educators play in all of our lives, and we are proud to award each of them $5,000 to split with their schools,” said Ginger Plexico, Vice President of Marketing, Herff Jones. “Such an outpouring of gratitude demonstrates the difference these educators make to their students and their communities.”

Herff Jones, Inc. in 2013 launched its “Herff Jones Teacher Shout Out” online community to allow students and former students of all ages to show their appreciation for the teachers, advisors and coaches who made positive differences in their lives. The Teacher Shout Out site allows current and former students to directly address their favorite teachers, coaches and advisors, saying “thank you,” and writing memories of the past and how they shaped the future.

Nearly 6,500 educators have been recognized on the site so far, representing all 50 states and Canada.

“Teachers and other educators give so much to students, and while we know their work is rewarding we also know they don’t always get to fully realize the positive impact they have on people’s lives,” says Plexico. “This ‘Community of Gratitude’ provides a compelling, interactive forum for their achievements to be recognized by the very people they’ve helped.”

In addition to the cash rewards for the 10 award recipients and their schools, the Teacher Shout Out site also directed $15,000 to school projects through a partnership with DonorsChoose.org.

“The contest was a success thanks in large part to the efforts of Herff Jones employees and independent sales representatives who helped promote this online community of gratitude since its launch,” Plexico said.

Current and past students can continue to post Shout Outs to those teachers, advisors and coaches who have made a difference in their lives.
